A Filipino seafarer who stabbed a killed another crew onboard the MSC Ravenna containership, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.

Ionian Management (IONIAN M) was sentenced on November 1, in the District of the Virgin Islands before U.S. District Court Judge Wilma A. Lewis in St. Croix, after pleading guilty to a violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships. IONIAN M was sentenced to pay a fine of $250,000 and placed on probation for one year.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) won a four-week jury trial, as on October 20, a jury convened in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida awarded NCL $159 million in its lawsuit against ABB, and ABB OY, claiming fraudulent and negligent misrepresentations and omissions ABB made about its propulsion systems (Azipods) that are used aboard many of NCL's cruise ships.

On August 11, 2022, a federal grand jury in the District of Puerto Rico returned an indictment charging 7 defendants with running a criminal enterprise dedicated to extorting and misleading shipping companies into paying fees for the loading and unloading of cargo at the Port of San Juan.

A US judge said the owner of an oil tanker must pay the US $44.6 million for its role in a 2017 collision between the tanker with a US Navy destroyer in southeast Asia that killed 10 sailors and injured dozens.

Liquimar Tankers Management Services and Evridiki Navigation were sentenced after being convicted at trial on all charges, including violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, falsifying ships’ documents, obstructing a U.S. Coast Guard inspection and making false statements to U.S. Coast Guard inspectors. 

A crewmember of the MSC Ravenna has pleaded guilty to stabbing and killing a crewmate while under way in the Pacific in 2020.
