The 2023 IMO GHG strategy sends an unequivocal signal to investors that ships being ordered today, and many already built, have to be capable of running on zero emission fuels, UMAS notes following MEPC80 decisions. 

The fifteenth Intersessional Working Group on Greenhouse Gases (ISWG GHG 15), which is the final working group meeting before the critical MEPC80, concluded on Friday 30rd of June, highlighting that IMO is at a tipping point and has a last chance to change the course on shipping decarbonization.

Announcing a new Insight Brief prepared by UMAS Director Tristan Smith on behalf of the Getting to Zero Coalition, the Global Maritime Forum says that "shipping's whole value chain needs to understand the opportunities and risks" that are included in aligning with a 1.5-degree pathway.

A report produced by Marine Capital, with the support of UMAS and Lloyd’s Register (LR), estimates that approximately £75bn of investment over the coming three decades will be required for the UK’s domestic maritime sector to transition to net zero.

The Intersessional Working Group (ISWG) on Greenhouse Gases (GHG) ISWG-GHG 12 took place from 16 to 22 May 2022, concluding that there was now consensus to price emissions at IMO, “as part of a basket of mid-term measures”.

More than 40% of the energy used by the U.S. shipping fleet could be replaced with zero emissions solutions this decade, giving the U.S. enormous potential to lead shipping’s decarbonisation, a new report by UMAS found.

A report prepared by UMAS for the Getting to Zero Coalition, called “Closing the Gap“, outlines policy measures that could close the competitiveness gap between fossil fuels and zero-emission alternatives in shipping.
