Ulstein has launched 'ULSTEIN THOR', a 149m Replenishment, Research and Rescue design which will feature a Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) to generate vast amounts of clean, safe electricity.

Ulstein and Schottel announced that they will begin a cooperation to take the next step in automation and digitalisation within marine operations. Namely, the former Ulstein subsidiary, Ulstein Blue CTRL, will continue as an independent company under the name Blue CTRL. Both Ulstein and Schottel will own 50% of the shares in the company. Deliveries from the company will be based on the X-CONNECT platform. 

The world’s largest plug-in hybrid vessel, Color Hybrid, received the title of 'Ship of the Year 2019'. Ulstein Group CEO Gunvor Ulstein received the Award from HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, during the Nor-Shipping exhibition on 4 June 2019. It will feature a battery package of 4.7 MWh, thus being able to travel 12 nautical miles only on battery power, charged with shore power in Sandefjord.

The construction of the world’s largest plug-in hybrid ship "Color Hybrid" reached an important milestone on 16 April, as the assembly of the 14 large blocks started, at Crist in Gdynia, Poland. The hybrid ship will be 160 metres in length and have a capacity of 2,000 passengers and about 500 cars, and it will be delivered in May 2019. 

Namely, the vessel will be 104.4 meters long, 18.4 meters wide and will have a weight of 7,400 tonnes, reaching a speed of at least 15.5 knots. Moreover, it will have electric propulsion and control system, thus being able to sail through high-latitude sea ice. The ship will be designed by the Norwegian shipbuilding company Ulstein.

The expedition cruise ship is designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS, aiming to enhance safety. The vessel will incorporate the X-BOW, a bow that can sustain inclement weather. Moreover, expanded fuel and water tanks will facilitate extended operations in remote areas.

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc. has signed an agreement with Norwegian Ulstein to build a new polar expedition ship. The new vessel, which incorporates a reduced environmental impact and promises fuel efficiency, will be built in Ulsteinvik, Norway and is scheduled for delivery in 2020.

Ulstein announced a steel cutting ceremony of the plug-in hybrid ferry for Color Line, held on Friday 14th July. Color Line was accepted by the municipality of Sandefjord for a new ferry for the Sandefjord-Strömstad connection, because they were able to present the most environmentally friendly solution.

Ulstein Verft announced that it signed a Letter of Intent with an undisclosed owner, for the construction of one or more expedition cruise vessels of the design type ULSTEIN CX104. The vessels are expected to provide exploration facilities and polar capability, while minimizing environmental impact and optimizing operational cost.

Ulstein delivered on-time the ‘Windea Leibniz’, wind farm service vessel, to Bernhard Schulte Offshore and ICBC Leasing, on 28 February. The name-ceremony took place in Ulsteinvik, on March 2. The vessel will shortly commence service at the Sandbank wind farm for Siemens.
