World’ s largest container vessel undergoes trials

Port of Gothenburg prepares for Maersk Triple-E Vessel Maersk Line's huge new container vessel Triple-E is undergoing trials at Chalmers Lindholmen. According to Harbour Master Jörgen Wallroth, the vessel, which will be launched in the summer, could be calling at the Port of Gothenburg.Triple-E will be the classification for what will be the largest container vessel in the world. To ensure the vessel can put into the Port of Gothenburg safely and efficiently, it is currently undergoing tests on a ship simulator at the Department of Shipping and Marine Technology at Chalmers University of Technology."We must be able to guarantee that the vessel can sail into and out of the port in a safe, environmentally correct way. That's why we are conducting a risk analysis. Together with pilots and tugs, we are putting the vessel through a series of trials on a simulator," says Jörgen Wallroth, Harbour Master at the Port of Gothenburg.Together with Maersk Line, SSPA and the Department of Shipping and Marine Technology at Chalmers, the Port of Gothenburg has entered data for the new vessel into the simulator. This work has taken several months. Now the time has finally arrived for the testing staff to take control ...

The ships will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 50% per container moved compared to the current industry averages on the Asia-Europe trade."We need to make more people aware of these solutions and inspire more to act. With the Sustainia100 there is no excuse for not choosing a sustainable path to the future" said Gro Harlem Brundtland, former prime minister of Norway, former director general of the World Health Organisation and a member of the Elders Team. Maersk Drops Option to Order Last 10 Triple-E Ships

After considering overcapacity on the Asia-Europe trade The decision by Maersk Line not to exercise an option to order another 10 mega-containerships with capacities of 18,000 20-foot equivalent units was no surprise considering overcapacity on the Asia-Europe trade, said a container shipping analyst."That had been implied quite a while ago," said Martin Dixon, editor of Drewry's Container Freight Rate Insight. "There's too much capacity, and demand on the Asia-Europe trade where those vessels would have been deployed is slowing."Maersk Line ordered 10 Triple-E ships a year ago this month from South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering. The world's largest container line also had an option to order another 20 of the ships, and later exercised its option to order 10 of them.If Maersk had exercised its option to order the last 10 of the 30 so-called Triple-E ships, those ships would have been delivered around 2015. Dixon said there are reports that other lines looking to hold back orders going into 2013. "Demand is unlikely to be strong on that trade in the two years ahead," he said. When Maersk announced on Feb. 17 that it would reduce capacity on the Asia-Europe trade by 9 percent, Maersk said it would ...

DNV environmental & energy efficiency scheme for ships

An easy tool to help ship owners and operators In close cooperation with the industry, DNV has developed an environmental and energy efficiency rating scheme for ships, in a voluntary basis, irrespective of class, age and flag of vessels, the Triple-ETM.This scheme aims to help operators, through self-assessment, to demonstrate active environmental management and energy efficient transportation of goods, which has been verified by an independent third party. It is applicable for new and existing ships and has four rating levels from 4 to 1 (where 1 is the highest). To reach a specific level, all the requirements stated for this level and the levels below it have to be complied with. For each of these levels, there are requirements within the areas of management, operation and design. The Triple-E is an easy tool to help ship owners and operators stay at the forefront with regard to emerging 'green shipping' rules and regulations and at the same time focuses on factors that can be influenced by the ship owner and operator, thereby facilitating a process of continuous improvement.Source: DNV

Maersk Line: No Plan To Use Option To Buy 10 More Triple-E Ships

Increasing its Triple-E vessel orders to 30 f Danish Maersk Line, the world's largest container shipping company, has yet to decide whether to exercise an option to increase its Triple-E vessel orders to 30 from 20, but doesn't expect to do so, a senior company executive said Tuesday.Maersk Line, a unit of Danish industrial conglomerate A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S (MAERSK-B.KO), has ordered two tranches of 10 Triple-E ships from South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., and has an option to order a further 10 before the end of February 2012."We have not taken the decision yet, but we do not expect to use the option," Maersk Line Chief Operating Officer Morten Engelstoft said.Since Maersk Line ordered the first two tranches of the Triple-E ships and secured the option, the global economy has deteriorated, shipping rates have dropped to unsustainable lows and the shipping industry has ramped up orders of new tonnage for the key Asia-Europe routes that Maersk had ordered the Triple-E ships for.Tuesday's statement was a repetition of previous comments made by Engelstoft."It's good to have the option open, but I don't expect that our estimated capacity needs will have changed substantially by year-end, and this would ...

Maersk extols virtues of twin skeg design

It will have 19% less powered than smaller Emma Maersk class and use 4% less energy Danish shipping giant has issued a statement extolling the environmental virtues of the twin engine, twin skeg and propeller design of its recently-ordered 18,000 TEU Triple E class containerships. Maersk says: "All together, the Triple-E's twin-skeg propulsion system consumes approximately 4 percent less energy than Emma Maersk's single engine/single propeller propulsion system.Maersk Line has placed a US$1.9bn order South Korea's Daewoo yard to build 20 Triple E vessels. The first 10 vessels will be delivered 2013 and 2014 and the remaining 10 vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2014 and 2015.Maersk says: "To build the world's largest and most efficient vessel, Maersk Line needed to custom design a propulsion system that would be both powerful enough to move the vessel, but with maximum efficiency to be worthy of the Es in its name: Economies of scale, Energy efficient and Environmentally improved.""For starters," it continues, "the top speed of the Triple-E was capped at 23 knots, two knots lower than Emma Maersk's top speed. This meant a power requirement of only 65-70 megawatts compared to Emma's 80 megawatts - a 19 percent reduction."A slower max ...
