KVH Industries announced that Pacific Basin Shipping Limited has completed the deployment of KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband solution to support its initiative to modernize ship-shore communications on their entire fleet of owned ships. The new equipment will enhance shore-to-ship crew training and support for safe ship operations and will help to boost morale onboard.

WMU has announced that it will offer an invaluable new programme in Maritime Safety and Security together with the DNV GL Maritime Academy. The MSS programme directly supports the University’s mission that includes promoting safe, secure and efficient shipping on clean oceans.

ICS and BIMCO’s new initiative aims to combine BIMCO’s eLearning courses and the Institute’s global engagement with students. This is a major boost for young people in the industry, giving them greater access to quality education and improved standards in maritime centres across the globe.

BSSE published an investigating report of an incident resulting in fatality onboard a drillship in the Gulf of Mexico, during pipe-handling operations, on October 2015. In particular, a floor hand, standing in the setback area, died when he was struck in the head by the bottom end of a 6⅝-inch drill pipe, as it was being moved from its storage location to the main drill center.

IMO continues to work on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, this time with a train-the-trainer course on energy-efficient ship operation, realized in Mumbai, on 28 February – 3 March, under GloMEEP project. The course trained maritime officials to the complex technical and regulatory aspects designed to make shipping greener.

IMO announced that the Government of Bangladesh is actively seeking international partnerships and financial support to help make the country’s ship-recycling facilities greener and more sustainable, following the successful completion of the first phase of a project aimed at improving safety and environmental standards within the country’s ship-recycling industry.

Under its GloMEEP project, IMO continues to promote energy-efficient ship operations, this time in Philippines. A workshop taking place in Manila on 23-24 February is equipping 30 maritime educators from across the country with the knowledge to introduce the topic of ship energy-efficiency into their teaching curriculums.

An IMO training in Malaysia has seen port State control officers practice inspecting air pollution and energy efficiency rules aboard a container ship in Johor Port. The participants from across Malaysia have been taking part in the three-day workshop (13-15 February) focusing on how to effectively enforce IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations.

The USMMAhas announced that Sea Year training for USMMA Midshipmen will resume on three commercial carriers beginning in March 2017. The reinstatement of the program follows the implementation of comprehensive new policies, including a zero tolerance policy for sexual assault and sexual harassment to ensure that the Academy’s standards for behavior, leadership and integrity are upheld.

The SMOU has announced that it will contribute S$1.2 million to local shipping companies to support them provide training berths for Singaporean seafaring cadets in the Tripartite Nautical Training Award and Tripartite Engineering Training Award Programmes.
