Stockholm shipping company Waxholmsbolaget has launched Stockholm’s first hybrid ice-going passenger ferry. The ship is powered by hybrid electric propulsion and is serving the Stockholm archipelago. It is able to transport up to 150 passengers. The ferry will help Stockholm become a fossil fuel-free city by 2040.

Ro/Ro traffic between Sweden and the continent are increasing, as volumes between Gothenburg and Belgium have risen for the ninth consecutive year. Namely, the forecast for 2018 expects a 10% increase for Ro/Ro units. An even further expansion of the service structure took place during the autumn, with the shipping companies linking up Spanish, Greek and Turkish ports to the growing European network.

Environmental law organization, ClientEarth has filed a complaint to Sweden’s Supreme Administrative Court to stop the construction of a 510 kilometre-long section of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in Swedish waters. The environmental lawyers argue that the construction documents are incomplete and inaccurate.

A 90-meter bulk carrier had been drifting in heavy weather, with hard winds and 4-meter-high waves, after it suffered a breakdown on the main engine off Marstrand, according to data provided by the Swedish Coast Guard. The bulk carrier was loaded with fertilizer.

During the first six months of 2018, container volumes at the Port of Gothenburg increased by 19%, from 318,000 to 378,000 TEUs. The number of cars and intra-European ro-ro units shipped increased by 10 and 4% respectively, while the energy segment fell by 3%.

After a cargo ship ran aground off Helsingborg, Sweden, local authorities managed to refloat it, with no pollution reported. The Swedish Coast Guard also performed a sobriety test on the Master of the ship and it handed the case over to the police, as it was suspecting that he was under the influence.

The ill-fated car carrier 'Makassar Highway' has been successfully towed and moored in the harbor area of Oskarshamn in the early hours of 2 August, 9 days after it ran aground off the Swedish coast, on the Baltic sea, according to the latest update by the Coast Guard. 

The Port of Gothenburg has started replanting 1.7 hectares of eelgrass beds to compensate for the eelgrass that will disappear while the port is building a new terminal. It is the largest replantion of eelgrass ever in Sweden. Eelgrass test plantings have now commenced in two locations just outside port area.

On Tuesday night, the towing operation of the grounded car carrier 'Makassar Highway' started for Oskarshamn. The towing takes place in a speed of two knots and is followed by Coast Guard units in case any oil is released. At the current rate, the ship is expected to arrive at Oskarshamn overnight towards Thursday.

Strong winds have caused an small oil leak during fuel oil removal operations from the grounded car carrier 'Makassar Highway' off the Swedish coast, according to the latest update from the Coast Guard. Approximately 7000 liters of oil have been removed so far by Coast Guard ships.
