The South African National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported of a Filipino seafarer that was medivaced off a bulk carrier suffering a dislocated shoulder. The rescue operation took place on Saturday, May 4 in Table Bay, off Cape Town. The patient was brought to its sea rescue station before being transported to hospital for further care.

The announced possible delisting of South Africa along with 80 or more other countries from the IMO's ‘Whitelist’ of countries compliant with the 1978 STCW Convention, as amended, is a matter of major concern, says the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).

Port of Ngqura in South Africa is the first port, globally, to have constructed a jet pump sand bypass system, enabling it to be in line with its dredging targets of 240,000 tons of sand per year. It's the only port in South Africa to have a record of decision - environmental legislation - for its construction and operation.

Port of Durban in South Africa, experienced an increase in its container, liquid bulk and dry bulk volumes during 2018, according to Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) data. The volumes achieved are the highest volumes in the last seven years.

Norden, Danish shipping company, is expanding operations to Africa where it plans to open an office by the end of the year. The new location in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, will be the company’s eleventh office, joining those already established in the US, Brazil, Australia, China, Singapore and India.

In its latest East and Southern Africa (worldwide) Container Trades 2019 report by Darron Wadey, Dynamar focuses on South Africa struggling during 2017 but has now seen a return to growth. The East, Southern Africa and Indian Ocean Islands trade, abbreviated as ESAf, has a coastline stretching some 21,000 kilometers, with fronts on the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) reassured that contingency plans are in place to prevent disruptions to fuel supplies during a scheduled five-week shutdown of the tanker berth in the Port Elizabeth harbour from 18 February until 25 March. The berth outage will enable repairs to be continued on the corroded steel structures supporting the berth’s access walkway.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) confirmed the sinking of a fishing vessel off the west coast of the Western Cape near Saldahna Bay and the rescue of its 10 member crew on February 16. On the morning of the same day a good samaritan vessel rescued the crewmembers of the stricken fishing vessel.

France’s Total has made a significant gas condensate discovery on the Brulpadda prospects, located on Block 11B/12B in the Outeniqua Basin, 175 kilometers off the southern coast of South Africa. After reaching the main goal, the well was deepened to a final depth of 3,633 meters and has also been successful in the Brulpadda-deep prospect.  Total along with its partners plan to acquire 3D seismic this year, followed by up to four exploration wells on this license. 

A new floating caisson will be created for the Sturrock Dry Dock operated by Transnet National Ports Authority in the Port of Cape Town. This will enable one of the biggest dry dock facilities in the Southern Hemisphere to double its productivity. The new caisson is part of an overhaul that is taking place at the port’s ship repair facilities under South Africa’s Operation Phakisa programme.
