In the first 11 months of 2018, all Baltic ports received and shipped 144.78 million tons of cargo, which surpassed the same period in 2017 by 5.6% or 7.665 million tons according to the Lithuanian Statistical Bureau. From the whole cargo-handling, 41.8% was reloaded in Latvia, 35.3% in Lithuania and 22.9% in Estonia.

The Port of Cabinda in Angola handled 17.552 empty and full containers during 2018. This is an increase of 5.880 containers, equal to 50.3% as stated by the port's Chairman. Samuel Sambo noted that 2019's goal is to handle 366.087 tons of diverse cargo and 18,516.3 Teus (containers) and the docking of 427 ships on the quay bridge.

Despite the ups and downs on wheat exports, Russian shipments kept a steady pace until the end of 2018 because of the absence of export restrictions from the country's authorities. In other words, Russian wheat exports experienced an unprecedented increase to 1.2 million tonnes the last week of December. Yet, the trade is expected to be lowered the holiday season, between Dec 30 to January 8, as stated by Reuters.

There are numerous of questions arising concerning the term “quality”. Most of these questions are focusing on what quality is in practice and who actually defines the required items that make an organization quality compliant. Generally, quality refers to reliability, efficiency and good performance and seeks to reach all stakeholders’ satisfaction, as this is the major factor that defines the requirements on which the organization will finally focus on.

The term “safety maturity” is used by organizations to assess their performance and their capability to maintain an enhanced safety management status. Safety maturity shows the level at which any organization can manage its actions and manipulate its internal procedures, resulting in a better safety performance promoting what is called: safety culture.

Safety culture and safety climate are similar terms describing an organization’s approach to safety, not only the visible efforts or attitudes its members chose to adopt, but also every mental function that defines their overall behavior. In other words, the climate is an item which is easily perceived by others while culture is the basis that lies hidden under the surface.

Once again this year’s agenda was full with meetings, agreements and important announcements for the maritime community. In this photo recap we have picked key moments that captivated industry’s interest in 2018.

A public opinion poll conducted by the Angus Reid Institute in partnership with Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping reveals that most Canadians believe transporting goods by sea is safe. Most say, the importance of marine shipping is growing, at the time, because uncertainty is intense among Canada and the United States trade.

BIMCO released some of its reflections regarding the growth of global shipping, highlighting that developing countries will play a key role in the next five years, something that will affect shipping as well. Namely, the dry bulk demand is supported, while container shipping will experience more pressure.

While the entire maritime industry is gradually shifting towards the digital era, with fully autonomous ships lurking just around the corner, the maritime certification process has remained unchanged.
