ClassNK releases software for BWMS retrofitting

ClassNK has announced the release of ClassNK-PEERLESS, a software package for BWMS retrofitting which aims to support system installations in existing ships more efficiently by exploiting 3D laser scanning technology.Working with Japanese 3D software provider Armonicos, the development for this application was coordinated by ClassNK, drawing on a research project involving The University of Tokyo, Monohakobi Technology Institute, NYK, MOL, “K” Line, Sasebo Heavy Industries, Sanwa Dock, and SEA Systems. The pressure on owners and operators to comply with the Ballast Water Convention is expected to prompt a need for urgent retrofits.  However, BWMS retrofits using traditional methods can take up to several months. The principal installation issue faced is that existing ships simply have not been built to accommodate BWMS, especially in their engine rooms.  Not only do the complex systems feature large diameter piping, fitting settling tanks into existing available space also presents a particular challenge which results in long design lead times needed to create 3D vessel models.“If a client needs to install a BWMS in an engine room with limited space, a lot more effort must be made to obtain the information required for a successful retrofit. Multiple onboard inspections have to be conducted and detailed ...

DNV GL publishes new version of ECO Insight

DNV GL has published the latest release of its fleet performance solution ECO Insight. Drawing on the feedback from a rapidly growing user community, this update incorporates several new features designed to give the user even more features and analytical decision support than ever before.“One of the benefits of having such a rapidly growing user community is that we are always getting new ideas and input from our customers,” says Dr Torsten Büssow, DNV GL’s head of fleet performance management.“There has been a very positive response to ECO Insight in the market with more than 400 vessels having signed up since January this year. But what has been even more exciting is the engagement of our customers. They are continually looking to innovate, even within our solution, and we are happy to work with them to meet their needs. This new version is the direct result of their input and feedback.”The new version of ECO Insight now offers several major new features, including:A complete satellite weather feed allowing the user to compare reported with measured weather.Automatically generated PDF reports to be send periodically to predefined recipients, e.g. the crew can in this way get a performance comparison against sister vessels ...

New software aims to improve fuel efficiency

James Fisher Mimic (JFM) and the Engineering Department's Dr Xiandong Ma wanted to make ships ‘smarter’ through developing condition monitoring software – Mimic – to improve fuel efficiency and reduce unnecessary maintenance. As part of a ship-owner and operating company, JFM use their fleet and experienced personnel to develop a range of products focussing on maximising the use of technology to solve problems within the shipping industry. They provide condition monitoring software that allow companies’ maintenance decisions to be based on condition and performance rather than on recommended time basis, which reduces unnecessary maintenance.Scheduled maintenance costs are a large part of the operating expenses for ship owners; often seen as pure costs, with no immediate need or longer term benefits, which leads to many owners putting it off. However this eventually leads to more breakdowns, resulting in a higher overall cost.Monitoring and diagnostics of ships play an increasingly important role in optimal scheduling of maintenance activities. Condition monitoring has previously only been used for specific aspects of a ships system. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the monitoring of fuel usage and conditions of the whole ship which JFM seek to develop and include in their software – Mimic.Expertise ...

Hong Kong's Wah Kwong implements ShipManager by DNV GL

Wah Kwong Ship Management (HK) Limited will adopt DNV GL's ShipManager integrated fleet management software suite to further improve operational efficiency, data transparency and safety reporting.Wah Kwong is a provider of maritime transport in the bulk carrier, tanker and LPG segments, operating a current fleet of 26 vessels, with nine more newbuilds on the way. Wah Kwong’s implementation of ShipManager supports its strategy of offering the highest standards of safety and quality of operations. In the face of increasing compliance requirements and a growing fleet, a new, integrated and professional fleet management software system is essential. The implementation of ShipManager will simplify and optimize the ship management by allowing extensive fleet-wide data collection and analysis.“We are entering into this project with the same aspirations we have with regards to everything we do in ship management,” says Tim Huxley, CEO Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings, explaining the decision to implement ShipManager.”We aim to continually improve efficiency and safety and strive to be ‘best in class’ when it comes to operating our fleet. By streamlining our processes across all ship management functions, we will relieve the documentation burden, particularly for those at sea, whilst better monitoring and improved data quality will assist ...

ABB to optimize routes of giant Maersk Line container ships

ABB is working with MeteoGroup to equip 140 container ships from Maersk Line with advisory software to optimize routes, boost maritime safety and protect precious cargo based on factors including the hull design and the weather; helping them avoid conditions that could be harmful to the ship, its crew or its cargo. The deal will see ABB combine its Octopus motion-monitoring, forecasting and decision-support software, which improves vessel availability and safety, with MeteoGroup’s SPOS Seekeeping plug-in. Once fitted on Maersk Line ships, this will enable captains to define on-board loading conditions, and more accurately determine areas of the ocean where their ship’s motion is likely to exceed threshold values. Routes can then be optimized automatically to skirt adverse conditions, ensuring cargo arrives safely and on-time at its destination port.“Both MeteoGroup and ABB take great pride in the fact that we are delivering an onboard advisory tool for the world’s biggest container shipping company,” said Heikki Soljama, managing director of ABB’s Marine and Ports business unit.“This will enable Maersk to execute cargo transportation across the world in a safe and efficient manner.”ABB’s Octopus advisory suite, which is also deployed aboard liquefied natural gas tankers and the world’s biggest cruise ships, includes a ...

Tool for effective trim optimisation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVNSbnNn38Q ECO Assistant is a trim optimisation tool that utilises a complete database of ship-individual power-demand data for all operating conditions. Using the vessel’s speed and draft, ECO Assistant will immediately calculate fuel comsumption and optimal trim along with expected fuel savings. The tool also possesses attractive features for onboard integration and onshore use.In the origin, I was explicit with you propecia before and after has changed my life. It has become much more fun, and now I have to run. Just as it is incredible to sit.
