Wartsila’s propulsion system selected by Indonesian owner for CNG carrier

The world’s first ever carrier vessel for compressed natural gas (CNG) is to be powered by an integrated Wärtsilä propulsion system, chosen for its energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The vessel is being built at the Jiangsu Hantong shipyard in China ordered by CIMC ENRIC and designed by CIMC ORIC for end user Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the Indonesian state owned energy company. The order with Wärtsilä was placed during the fourth quarter, 2014. The new vessel will feature a 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel main engine operating primarily on gas. Wärtsilä will also supply the controlled pitch propeller and gearbox, all of which will be fully integrated so as to optimise the propulsion efficiency. This will be the first dual-fuel powered vessel owned by an Indonesian ship owner. The Indonesian government’s policy is to promote the utilisation of natural gas as a marine fuel because of its environmental advantages. “This first ever CNG carrier to be built is indicative of the growing importance of natural gas as a fuel for both land based and marine applications. We are proud to have been selected to provide the propulsion system for this ship, which is designed with efficiency and sustainability as the ...

Company switches DFDE to MEGI propulsion

The Norwegian company FLEX LNG announced that they have reached an agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries to convert  the propulsion system for two LNG carriers from DFDE to the fuel efficient 2-stroke slow speed MEGI main engines.  The consequence of the change is an increase in the yard price of the vessels taking into account the change in specification, including the deployment of the new engine system and exhaust gas treatment for compliance with new emissions regulations, 0.09% Boil-off Rate to maintain speed flexibility, and ballast water treatment system. The price increase is to be paid by FLEX on delivery. The expected delivery dates of the vessels have been postponed from Q1 2017 to Q1 and Q2 2018. With the support of major shareholders and Samsung Heavy Industries, FLEX is laying the foundation for building an attractive position in the LNG shipping market with the newest generation of LNG carriers. For a typical long haul trade the new and more efficient twin screw LNGC design with MEGI engines will have average daily fuel consumption (gas and fuel oil) of approximately 25% less than the DFDE LNG carrier design recently delivered into the market. This corresponds to a saving of more ...

Wartsila to supply propulsion solution for 3 new gas fuelled tugs

Three large new escort tugs contracted by Norwegian operator Østensjø Rederi, will feature Wärtsilä dual-fuel (DF) engines integrated with a customized gas storage and supply system also supplied by Wärtsilä. The tugs will operate primarily on LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) but the Wärtsilä DF engines provide the flexibility to select the most suitable fuel according to availability, price and local environmental restrictions. The contract for the Wärtsilä solution was signed in December 2014. The design of the tugs has been carried out by the designer Robert Allan Ltd in Canada, in close cooperation with Østensjø Rederi. The overall LNG system, which incorporates Wärtsilä’s unique LNGPac fuel system, a fully integrated gas handling system, and the Wärtsilä Gas Valve Unit (GVU), has been specially designed by Wärtsilä to accommodate the need for a compact solution. The tugs will be powered by 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines. The Wärtsilä equipment will be delivered during the first half of 2016. “These are trend setting tugs in that they provide environmental sustainability through the use of LNG fuel. Wärtsilä is the technology leader in making this trend possible. At the same time, the flexibility of the dual-fuel engine technology also ensures a high level ...

ABB wins orders in Arctic cruise projects

ABB has  received record levels of new orders for the marine part of the group’s business, driven by solid growth in demand for electrical propulsion systems especially in the cruise and ice-going segments. In 2014, the company won orders worth $ 200 million to deliver power plants and Azipod® propulsion systems to cruise customers and $ 900 million to deliver solutions to icegoing and icebreaking projects. The cruise market, where electric podded propulsion is the preferred propulsion type, has seen a significant growth in recent years especially in emerging markets. During 2014, ABB secured a number of orders with leading shipyards to deliver latest generation Azipod XO propulsion systems to high-end cruise vessels. In addition to repeat orders from longstanding customers, ABB won strategically important contracts to supply Azipod propulsion units to new customers. Arctic shipping volumes and oil and gas exploration in the Arctic area have reached record level, creating the need for specialized solutions for icegoing and icebreaking vessels. In the Arctic conditions, Azipod VI propulsion units optimize vessel efficiency and maneuverability while they also provide a high level of reliability to operations in the harsh and demanding conditions. “ABB developed the Azipod® electrical propulsion system to deliver tangible ...

GE’s Dual-fuel electric system to power LNG carriers

GE’s Power Conversion business announced that it had received a new order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. for electric power and propulsion systems for two LNG carriers. The LNG carriers will be built for the purpose of transporting LNG from Louisiana, USA. Their construction is scheduled to be completed from 2017 through 2018. From the perspective of improved performance, electric propulsion technology is optimal for LNG carriers. GE’s robustly simple induction-based propulsion motor technology and high output power pulse width modulation (PWM) technology improve reliability and help lower maintenance costs for vessels. “GE has demonstrated a low risk solution to KHI, showing professionalism in the execution plan and a high standard of quality control of their equipment which is the result of extensive experience in the supply of 65 Dual Fuel Diesel Electric (DFDE) drive systems with induction technology for LNG carriers over the last decade. GE is happy to forge this new partnership with a key player in the Marine industry showing its future commitment to Japanese customers.” said Paul English, Marine Business Leader, GE Power Conversion. The technology that GE Power Conversion has introduced to the maritime industry comes with an extensive track record and is currently used ...
