Fincantieri announced the float out of the ocean cruise ship "Viking Jupiter", which was built for Viking. The cruise ship is equipped with scrubbers and has energy efficient engines to meet with strict environmental regulations. The ship will have a gross tonnage of about 47,800 tons, 465 cabins with accommodation for 930 passengers.

The Diesel Technology Forum and the Environmental Defense Fund released a report highlighting the emission reduction benefits that can be offered by the latest clean diesel models. The joint research estimates that replacing older engines in a tug boat with the latest clean diesel model that meets the latest emissions milestones can reduce on average 14.9 tons of NOx emissions per year.

The US Energy Department’s Vehicle Technologies Office released a multi-topic funding opportunity announcement (FOA). The funding, which will be $12 million, regards the Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines. The funding will have two topics: Multi-Mode Optimized Fuel/Engine System Development; Bioblendstocks to Optimize Mixing Controlled Compression Ignition Engines.

The US EPA announced the availability of grant funding to modernize the country's diesel fleet by retrofitting or replacing vehicles with cleaner, more efficient diesel engines. Through its Diesel Emission Reduction Program, EPA anticipates awarding approximately $40 million to eligible applicants.

MSIU issued a report analyzing the probable causes of the main engine damage on the RoRo cargo ship 'Chodziez', while en route from Oran, Algeria, to Marseille, France, in March 2017. The investigation concluded that the oil mist alarm was triggered by a mist of oil, which was generated by a hot spot, following the failure of the bearing shells.

The latest generation of MTU’s Series 4000 engines equipped with the SCR system for ships successfully completed the IMO Tier III certification tests. The engines now comply with the emission regulations in accordance with IMO MARPOL Annex VI, IMO Tier III. MTU’s SCR system is fully controlled, with real-time NOx measurement.

While a workboat was trying to conduct a transfer operation, its engine stopped working. Despite the fact that the crew made several attempts to restart it, they were all unsuccessful. An investigation showed that the fuel in the tank was contaminated because of water condensation causing a bacteria buildup.

TOTE Maritime Alaska, part of US-based TOTE, has completed the first of four conversion periods for its Orca class vessels, a process that will enable the ships to use LNG as a fuel. The company's 'North Star' completed her first voyage, after being outfitted with two LNG tanks immediately behind the ship’s bridge.

In collaboration with MTI Corporation, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha developed the diagnostic tool "Kirari MUSE" that collects the operating sound of ships' engine equipment in an effort to utilize big data. Kirari MUSE visualizes the sound of the engine and it diagnoses the condition.

MAN Diesel & Turbo announced the signing of a MoU with Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division on the development and production of an LPG dual-fuel engine. Upon completion, HHI-EMD will be able to deliver LPG-fueled, two-stroke-propulsion engines.
