During the 2019 Hellenic American Maritime Forum in Athens, Mr. Panos Kourkountis, Technical Director, Sea Traders SA, focused on 2020 sulphur cap and the operators’ perspective regarding the GHG emission reduction. He noted that unless safe, cheap and CO2 free fuel is made available in the near future, the shipping industry must implement a combination of emissions reduction measures to achieve 2030 and 2050 goals.

Referring to key priorities for a robust, resilient and sustainable maritime sector, Mr. Gavin Allwright, Secretary General, IWSA, highlights the need for an integrated approach that will ensure up-stream and down-stream impacts are always assessed in a transparent and collaborative way and emissions aren’t shifted, offset or dumped into other sectors.

Maritime still needs a better understanding of sustainability benefits and impacts, says Lloyd’s Register Global Sustainability Manager Katharine Palmer who acknowledges transparency and decarbonisation in connection with digitalisation as the defining trends toward 2050.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined as the process for organizations to integrate social, environmental, ethical and human rights concerns into their operations and core strategy, in close collaboration with their stakeholders. In this context, SAFETY4SEA’s annual survey aims to assess the CSR performance of the maritime industry by examining 10 factors according to ISO 26000 requirements and CSR strategy of EU.
