New requirements for fire-fighters’ outfits

Meeting the requirements of SOLAS and the FSS Code The 2014 amendments to SOLAS and the Fire Safety Systems (FSS) Code adopted by IMO Resolutions MSC.338(91) and MSC.339(91) will enter into force on 1 July, 2014, introducing revised and new requirements for fire-fighter's outfit breathing apparatus and two-way portable radiotelephone apparatuses.Owners and operators of new and existing ships should ensure that the fire fighters' outfits on their vessels meet the requirements of SOLAS and the FSS Code and that any changes to the fire locker contents are shown on the vessel's fire control plans, if included.Breathing apparatusChanges to SOLAS regulation II-2/10.10.1 and the FSS Code mean that: "Compressed air breathing apparatus shall be fitted with an audible alarm and a visual or other device which will alert the user before the volume of the air in the cylinder has been reduced to no less than 200 litres."This applies to ship's constructed (keel laid) on or after 1 July, 2014. Drillship contract for safety equipment

Order for lifeboats, davits, fast rescue boat for Maersk Drilling Norwegian company Noreq has received an order for lifeboats, davits, fast rescue boat and rescue boat davit for six drill ships for Maersk Drilling, which are being built at Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea.The contract is for a package for each ship comprising six 80-person lifeboats together with davits, plus one fast rescue boat with davit. The total makes it, according to Noreq, the largest single lifeboat order it has received.This new order joins several other recent contracts. "2012 and 2013 are looking to be very promising for our company, and we are proud to be approved by the biggest players in our industry. Ocean Safety signs supply contract with Svitzer UK

To supply safety equipment to the company's UK fleet of 80 vessels The UK's largest independent supplier of safety equipment, Ocean Safety, has been awarded a significant contract by towage, salvage and emergency response fleet Svitzer UK to supply and service ISO and SOLAS lifejackets, pyrotechnics, survival suits and a range of other safety equipment to the company's UK fleet of 80 vessels."We are delighted to have won this contract from Svitzer UK," comments Ocean Safety Sales Director, Mark Hart. "We are pleased that Svitzer has put its confidence in our high level of experience and expertise."The contract confirms Ocean Safety as the preferred supplier to Svitzer UK, which will also provide and service the Jason's Cradle man overboard recovery system, manufactured for commercial operators in harsh marine environments.
