Rolls-Royce's MAXCMAS research project found that the use of newly developed algorithms allowed existing COLREGs to remain relevant in a crewless environment, and that Artificial Intelligence-based navigation systems can comply with the rules to avoid collision effectively, even when approaching manned vessels were interpreting the rules differently.

A new situational awareness system has been launched, aiming to reduce the risks of navigation during night, in bad weather on congested waterways. To do this, the system uses sensors with intelligent software. The new system, will collect data, in order to ensure safe navigation.

SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce that Rolls Royce Marine has received the 2018 SMART4SEA Technology Award at the prestigious 2018 SMART4SEA Awards Ceremony which successfully concluded on January the 30th, the evening ahead of the SMART4SEA Conference, at Yacht Club of Greece in Athens.

Jensen Maritime was ordered to design a new 100-foot, Z-Drive hybrid tugboat for Baydelta Maritime. The company will use Rolls-Royce hybrid technology and it will be the first hybrid tug designed by Jensen to enter the construction phase. The hybrid tug is planned to be delivered in the first quarter of 2019.

The delivery includes the Energy Storage Container System, an upgrade of the existing Rolls-Royce ship design engineering package to match the new features, an upgrade of the Dynamic Positioning system and the ACON control system, and the new Rolls-Royce Energy Monitoring system, which provides an overview of energy usage onboard.

The new Research & Development Centre for Autonomous Ships includes a Remote and Autonomous Experience Space aimed at showcasing the autonomous ship technologies Rolls-Royce has already introduced, as well as those in the development stage.

SEACOSCO will also purchase eight Rolls-Royce designed new construction platform supply vessels from COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry. SEACOSCO is set to receive seven of the PSVs in 2018 and one in 2019. SEACOR Marine will be in charge of full commercial, operational and technical management of the vessels.

Rolls-Royce is considering sale of its loss-making marine business, on the context of embarking on simplification of business, including the evaluation of strategic options for its Commercial Marine operation and a reduction from five operating businesses to three core units based around Civil Aerospace, Defence and Power Systems. 

This joint project will use Rolls-Royce's IAS, which can be an underlying technology, and the IAS will be installed on a ferry in service. The technology will be used in new sensors for nautical instruments, like ship radar.
