The dry bulk freight market is not expected to register a stellar performance this year. Freight rates are expected to remain depressed through to 2012, unless the recent surge in scrapping is maintained.

RINA establishes desigh standards for dry bulk cargo carriers

To enable them to carry fine ores safely at any moisture content Classification society RINA has established rigorous design standards for the modification or newbuilding of dry bulk cargo carriers to enable them to carry fine ores safely at any moisture content.A number of recent bulker losses have been attributed to the liquefaction of wet nickel ore cargoes. Using RINAs standards ships would be safe even if the cargo liquefied and the vessels would no longer have to rely on unreliable moisture tests at the load port to determine if the cargo is safe to load or not.Paolo Salza, Head of Technical Department, RINA, says, The mandatory application of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code enhances the safety of bulk carriers through the setting of constructional and operative requirements. But they dont set out details of how to carry nickel ore and other unprocessed ores, which may liquefy during transportation, safely. Essentially, the rules say vessels may load these ores if the Transportable Moisture Limit is not exceeded. That is fine, but establishing that is difficult and the TML is easily affected by recent rain or other factors. It is much safer to design or convert the ship ...

RINA issues rules for gas-powered ships

Classification society says natural gas could give 20% cut in CO2 emissions at 'competitive prices' Italian-based RINA is the latest classification society to publish rules for gas powered ships. The new RINA new notation Gas Fuelled Ships establishes requirements for the use of liquefied or compressed natural gas (LNG or CNG) on board ship as an alternative to traditional fuels. It is, RINA says, designed to give the industry a regulatory tool to ensure that the arrangement and installation on board of machinery using this type of fuel are such as to provide a level of integrity, from the point of view of safety and reliability, equivalent to that of a conventional installation.RINA says that the use of natural gas as a fuel provides the advantages of a total reduction in sulphur oxide emissions, a considerable reduction in nitric oxide emissions, a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and competitive prices at current costs and estimates for the near future. The new notation was approved last week at the annual meeting of RINA's Technical Committee, which provides technical oversight of RINA's rules for ship classification, in the RINA offices in Rome. The meeting coincides with celebrations ofthe 150th anniversary of the founding of ...
