The Standard P&I Club issued a master’s guide to raise awareness of fire risks on ferries. This type of ship presents particular risks due to the cargo onboard: Cars, lorries and refrigerated containers, all of these have combustible material and their own fire hazards, something which a ship’s crew cannot easily control. 

The UK MCA issued a report for port operations, providing a detailed guidance on a number of issues relevant to the management of ports and other marine facilities, as a supplement to the Port Marine Safety Code. The publication is designed to provide general guidance and examples of how an organisation could meet its commitments in terms of compliance with the Code. 

In response to a call from IMO, IBIA has issued a 'Best practice guidance for suppliers for assuring the quality of bunkers delivered to ships'. The guidance represents the first time a concerted effort has been made to address procedures to safeguard and maintain bunker fuel quality control throughout the entire supply chain.

Catching most types of fish produces far less carbon per kilo of protein than land-based alternatives, such as beef or lamb, according to a new study by IMAS and Canadian scientists. The study provides the first global breakdown of wild fishery emissions by country and compares the carbon impact of each nation’s fishing industry with agriculture and livestock production.

The International Maritime Pilots Association conducted a Pilot Ladder Safety providing detailed information regarding the results they have concluded in. For a Maritime Pilot, embarking and disembarking a ship is a dangerous task. The method of operation has changed very little over the years, and a large percentage of vessels still do not comply with standards for those arrangements.

The Isle of Man Ship Registry issued its annual report for 2017, presenting data provided by the Registry's survey and inspection activity throughout the year. The report revealed that the number of non-conformance notices decreased, but the number of ship deficiencies remained at the same levels. Most deficiencies concerned fire safety and MLC-related issues. 

IMO is at risk of unresolved conflicts of interest due to shortcomings in its governance, according to a new study by Transparency International. The anti-corruption organisation noted that private shipping-industry concerns could have undue influence over the policymaking process at the IMO, which could impede actions against GHG emissions.

The International Council on Clean Transportation issued five briefing papers, prepared by PhD Bryan Comer, summarizing HFO use in the IMO Polar Code Arctic, for 2015. Analyzing data for the cruise sector, the paper reveals 40 of 62 cruise ships operated on HFO in the region in 2015, with most HFO-fueled cruise ships flying the Bahamas flag. 

ICCT issued five briefing papers summarizing HFO use in the IMO Polar Code Arctic, for 2015. While ships registered in Russia consumed the most HFO by far in the region in 2015, followed by Denmark and South Korea, Russian-flagged fishing vessels emitted about 10 tonnes of BC, 10-times more than Denmark and South Korea.

The cooperation group on places of refuge in the European Union discussed changes to the operational guidelines and possible global implementation. The participants supported the guidelines, and emphasised that there will be no denial of refuge without inspection, and any rejection should be based on safety reasons only.
