In January 2018, Maritime NZ surveyed people who hold fishing-related certificates, asking their experiences on fatigue and the steps they are taking to minimise it. Most of the 318 respondents were skippers and 82% have been working in the industry for more than 10 years.

With retail sales increasing and retailers rushing to bring merchandise into the US ahead of proposed new tariffs on products from China, imports at the nation’s major retail container ports have set two new records this summer and are expected to set another this month, according to the Global Port Tracker report by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

The US Government Accountability Office released a report on the challenges that the US flag deep sea fleet is facing. This includes increasing operating costs and a declining number of qualified American mariners.  According to the report, the US government supports the US-registered fleet, helping it meet national defense needs. However, it has had a negative effect on some non-defense government programs.

According to the 28th annual State of the Climate report, 2017 was the third warmest year on record for the globe, behind 2016 and 2015. The planet also experienced record-high greenhouse gas concentrations as well as rises in sea level, while Arctic maximum sea ice coverage fell to a record low. 

A total of seven incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia were reported in July 2018, according to ReCAAP ISC's monthly report. The report reveals a 4% decrease in total incidents during January-July 2018, compared to the same period in 2017, but unveils an increased activity in the Singapore Strait.

According to the seventh edition of the Cruise Lines International Association’s Travel Agent Cruise Outlook research report, the cruise industry is continuing strong. Namely, cruise sales are on the rise for 79% of travel agents. Alaska lies at the top of the list of popular destinations.

The American Meteorological Society published its "State of the Climate in 2017", reporting that the sea level last year was the highest annual average since 1993. The sea level has increased for the sixth consecutive year. As for the Arctic, sea ice extent continued to see low levels.

A record total of 98,000 New Zealanders sailed the world’s oceans on a cruise holiday in 2017, with a 8.7% leap in passenger numbers, validating the country's position as one of the world’s fastest-growing cruise markets, according to CLIA Australasia’s 2017 New Zealand Source Market Report.
