After spending more than three decades slaughtering whales in defiance of an international moratorium on commercial whaling, Japan is proposing a package of measures at an International Whaling Commission meeting next month that would effectively lift the global ban on for-profit whaling.

Seafarers are often exposed to difficult working conditions with multiple stressors and are at risk of panic attacks. The UK P&I Club recently received a report for a seafarer repatriated and diagnosed with panic disorder, insomnia and depression and proposes measures to tackle this issue.

Port of Los Angeles has seen an unprecedented 60% drop in NOx emissions compared to 2005, their lowest level to date, according to the Port’s 2017 Inventory of Air Emissions released last week. The inventory also shows the Port container volume reached an all-time high of 9.34 million TEUs through 2017.

The UK Department for Transport published its Annual UK Port Freight statistics for 2017 which shows that overall total freight tonnages handled by UK ports were stable, totalling 482mt. The figures confirm that there was a continued but modest growth in Roll-on Roll-off traffic.

According to a new study, the vast majority of the world’s oceans are damaged by human activity. The areas that are currently intact are mostly in the remote Pacific and at the poles and they need protection from fishing and pollution, the scientists noted. Namely, only 13% of the world’s oceans is untouched.

According to the American Petroleum Institute’s latest monthly statistical report, the US achieved a record for the production of natural gas liquids during July, as the US produced 4.4 million barrels per day. July also saw the US tie its record for crude oil production at 10.7 mb/d.
