Intertanko has published the 'Guide to New Zealand’s biofouling and ballast water requirements'. In this it offers guidance to Members on New Zealand’s biofouling and ballast water requirements for commercial vessels. If the ship cannot prove that it complies with the standard, it may be subject to a dive inspection in New Zealand. Non-compliant vessels will be directed to either manage the biosecurity risk or to leave New Zealand.

Human Rights at Sea issued its independent review and commentary into the 'Human Rights and International Rule of Law Ramifications of the De-Flagging of M/V Aquarius Dignitus'. This is a vessel chartered by SOS Méditerranée and previously operated along with the Amsterdam-based branch of Médecins Sans Frontières, rescuing men, women and children in the Central Mediterranean Sea.

In its latest South America Container Trades report, Dynamar focuses on the growth that has returned in America after three years of reduction in its global trade. The report highlights the development after economic contractions between 2014-2016, with a recovery in 2017. The overall container carryings between South America and the rest of the market experienced an increase of over 10 million TEU in 2017, 8% more than 2016. The report expects South America containerized trade to reach 14 million TEU in 2021.

According to a new MIT study, climate change is causing significant changes to phytoplankton in the world’s oceans, and over the coming decades these changes will affect the ocean’s colour, intensifying its blue regions and its green ones. The researchers found that, by the year 2100, more than 50% of the world’s oceans will change in colour, because of climate change.

The report 'Breaking New Ground' presents the outcomes of the Global Maritime Forum’s recent Annual Summit in Hong Kong. The high-level meeting gathered 200 decision-makers from across the entire maritime spectrum to address key challenges and opportunities facing global seaborne trade. The Summit discussed about decarbonisation, digitalization and improving safety.

The EU adapted its legislation to ensure legal certainty for ship operators when the UK leaves the EU. On January 25, member states' ambassadors approved amended rules on the assessment of ship inspection organisations, whose task it is to ensure the safety of ships and prevent marine pollution. The presidency reached a provisional agreement with the European Parliament on 21 January.

The European Commission adopted a proposal on February 4, to revise the EU system for monitoring, reporting and verification of CO2 emissions from maritime transport. This aims to take appropriate account of the global data collection system for fuel oil consumption of ships established by IMO. The goal of the proposal is to facilitate the harmonious implementation of the EU MRV and the IMO DCS.

UNCTAD launched the 'Key Statistics and Trends in Trade Policy 2018' study highlighting that European Union exports are those to possibly rise, capturing about $70 billion of U.S.-China bilateral trade, meaning $50 billion of Chinese exports to the US, and $20 billion of U.S. exports to China. Also, Japan, Mexico and Canada will each capture more than $20 billion.

North P&I Club has launched a new series of bite-sized training packs to help seafarers avoid the contributing factors to workplace casualties. The first training pack focuses on the Can Test, the IMSBC complementary test for bulk cargoes, to address suspected bulk cargo liquefaction, which has claimed lives of an estimated 112 seafarers since 2007. 

ABS published that it is launching a new Guide for Liquefied Gas Tank Barges with Remote Control and Monitoring of Essential Systems Requirements for design and construction of unmanned barges equipped with various degrees of automation. The company released a guidance aiming to help shipyards and barge operators.
