Maritime leaders called for the industry to proactively prepare for future challenges to not only remain competitive and relevant in today's volatile market environment, but to also future-proof the industry.

Following the news that OCIMF is planning a TMSA3 release within 2017, OCIMF announced an update regarding the TMSA software by integrating the self-assessment management tool into the SIRE application.

The 29th Interim Meeting of ASA SERC was held in Fukuoka, Japan 10 March 2017. The meeting was attended by delegates from ASA member associations of ASEAN, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, discussing among other issues, the major challenges that shipping industry currently faces.

ECSA announced that the European shipping industry welcomes the European Commission’s mid-term review of the EU Maritime Transport Strategy 2009-2018. The industry endorses the emphasis on better regulation and strategy goals, promoting Europe as a globally leading, high-quality region for shipping to do business in.

The Standard P&I Club announced that, after the UN Security Council adoption, on 30 November 2016, of Resolution 2321, against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, in response to its nuclear test on 9 September 2016, the EU has now adopted Council Regulation No 329/2007 giving effect to measures provided for Resolution 2321.

In 2014, the OCIMF General Purposes Committee approved a periodic review of the Tanker Management & Self Assessment (TMSA) publication, in order to bring it up to date with current legislation, new technologies and current best Industry practices. OCIMF have recognised that many companies currently implement a satisfactory TMSA system, and it was determined that a light touch be applied when reviewing the publication.

A new set of rules to increase the financial transparency of ports and create clear and fair conditions for access to the port services market throughout Europe was formally adopted by the European Council on 23 January 2017.

The 1 January is traditionally a day when new legislation enters into force. The year 2017 will be no different. Therefore, the North of England P&I Club has issued reminder of the new regulations that become effective from January 1st 2017 and also the amendments of existing regulations.

From December 2016, cruise vessels capable of accommodating more than 100 passengers and at berth in Sydney Harbour will be issued with a Direction by AMSA. The Direction will require the vessel to limit sulphur emissions by using low sulphur fuel or an alternative measure that achieves an equivalent outcome.

The European Parliament has finalized a three years legislative process concerning the Port Services Regulation, also known now as Ports Regulation, by adopting a report on the Regulation which establishes a framework for the organisation of port services and financial transparency of ports presented by the rapporteur MEP Knut Fleckenstein.
