ADNOC Logistics & Services announced that it has reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 23% across a fleet of 27 vessels. This is part of the 'Al Daffah Energy Efficiency Project' to deliver more operational efficiency. The impact of the project has been significant, as since 2013, ADNOC L&S has reduced its CO2 emissions by 1 million tons.

In this article, SQE Marine provides information about the current situation on Chinese emissions regulations. Specifically, China relevant authority has set three ECA’s in China area in which from 01-01-2019, all vessels should use (all time) fuel with 0.5% m/m sulfur content.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises announced that it will use low-sulphur Marine Gas Oil on all expedition ships from July 2020. Currently, the company is using MGO in particularly vulnerable areas like the Arctic, Antarctica and Kamchatka. The routes will be managed on the basis an eco-efficient average speed, which aims to reduce fuel consumption by one third.

The Clean Shipping Alliance 2020 announced that it has appointed Ian Adams as its Executive Director. Ian Adams said that there has been a lot of loose speculation about the environmental benefits of scrubbers, something that hides the fact that scrubbers have a very  positive net environmental impact on the maritime environment.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore with US $2.4 million to repower marine engines and upgrade equipment that is used to move cargo to reduce emissions at the port. The EPA funding comes from a 'Diesel Emission Reduction Act' grant.

Equinor has been awarded an exploitation permit for CO2-storage on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, according to Norway's Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. The storage solution is part of the large-scale carbon capture and storage-project in Norway. If approved, the storage is set to begin operations in 2023 or 2024, Gassnova, a governmental agency in charge of developing the CCS project, reported.

It is estimated that the oceans are warming faster in comparison to the past, setting a new record on temperature in 2018, resulting to damaging marine life. Measurements, run by an international network of 3.900 floats that are deployed in the oceans since 2000, revealed an increased warming since 1971, than what it was calculated by the UN assessment of climate change in 2013. 

The European Investment Bank (EIB) launched a new public consultation on energy financing to better reflect energy industry trends and to enhance its support for the European Union’s 2030 energy and climate targets. The next three months, EIB will engage with stakeholders, including shareholders, industry associations, civil society and the private sector to develop a new energy lending policy that supports EU targets.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has completed a shore power project to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution by enabling ships to shut down their diesel engines and connect to an electrical grid supplied by renewable energy sources. The system was successfully commissioned and connected to the first ship in October.

Langh Tech and STX Offshore & Shipbuilding signed a deal regarding scrubber retrofits on seven vessels in the Polaris fleet. The four 180K bulkers and the three 300K VLOCs in the fleet will be equipped with open loop scrubbers. The component deliveries will start in summer 2019 and the installations will follow soon after component delivery.
