DEME’s subsidiary Middle East Dredging Company has been awarded a contract for the Old Doha Port Redevelopment project in Qatar. In Singapore, Dredging International Asia Pacific Pte Ltd secured a contract for the Ayer Merbau Reclamation Phase 2 project.

Qatar Ports Management Company and Qatar Chemical and Petrochemical Marketing and Distribution Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding, to benefit from Hamad Port's services for a renewable five-year period.

The Suez Canal Authority is committed to ban entry of all Qatari vessels in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, as part of maintaining national security, according to chairman Mohab Mamish. However, the Constantinople 1869 agreement, sees as illegal the ban of ships -coming from any country- from passing through the main Canal.

Maersk Line announced a new solution for its box bookings bounding to and out of Qatar via the Port of Salalah, Oman in order to avoid trade restrictions. The company will be running its own feeder service from Salalah in Oman to Qatar by loading containers on smaller vessels in Oman and travelling on from there.

International law firm Ince & Co has advised shipping and transportation companies with cargo interests in Qatar to plan for a period of disruption and uncertainty, following the decision by a number of Qatar’s neighbours and other nations to cut diplomatic ties and close borders with the Gulf State.

As of 6 June 2017, ports across Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates are closed to ships flying Qatari flags. Some ports may also be closed to ships, irrespective of their flag, that are destined for or arriving from Qatari ports, which in practice, means a trade embargo.

Further to the recent announcement that several Arabic states have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, the ship traffic from and to Qatar was suspended by Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt. The Saudi Arabia Port Authority confirmed that no vessel will be allowed coming from or going to Qatar, regardless of the vessels’ flag or owners nationality.

Qatar-based Milaha has launched a door-to-door shipping service between Qatar and UAE, mainly targeting SMEs in the automotive spare parts, fashion retail, and the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods sectors. The service frequency is expected initially to be weekly, allowing operators to track their cargo online from point of origin to destination.
