The port of Antwerp reported a very good first quarter with a freight volume of 58,328,678 tonnes, an increase of 7.1% from the same period last year. The main driver of the increase is the container freight which had a growth of 9.5% compared with the first three months of 2017. The container volume rose by 9.5% to 32,580,600 tonnes.

The port handled 68 cruise liners bringing over 140,000 passengers and crew to the region. In the container industry, combined total traffic through the Port and Bantry Bay Port Company reached 10.3 million tonnes in 2017, a very good increase of 8.6% compared to 2016. Total imports increased by 6.4% while exports increased by 12.3%. 

In 2017, the volume of freight loading and unloading in Albanian ports was 4 million tonnes, increasing by 7.1 % compared to 2016, while goods exported by sea represent 62.8 %, according to data provided by the Albanian Institute of Statistics.

As the Port of Philadelphia’s $392 million Main Channel Deepening Project reaches completion and cargo volumes are surging, the port expects next month the first two of the four super post-Panamax cranes due at the Port’s Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.

While shipments of automobiles showed the highest growth at 14.4%, followed by soft coal with 11.6% and machinery up 8.3%, the cargo traffic of sand and steel dropped by 35.9% and 12.8%, respectively, according to data provided by the country's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

The Port of Los Angeles moved more cargo in 2017 than in any time in the Port’s 110-year history, racking up 9,343,192 TEUs, a 5.5% increase over 2016’s record-breaking year. This is the most cargo moved annually by a Western Hemisphere port.

With a fall of 19% from 2016, the 2017 went down in history as the worst year ever for container volumes at the Swedish Port of Gothenburg. The total freight volume came in at just over 40 million tonnes, buoyed up by good, and in some cases record-breaking, performances in other sectors.

Annual container handling capacity at the Chinese port of Shanghai has exceeded the 40 million TEUs, marking a global record. The port has now become the world’s busiest container port, since it first started container handling in 1978 with a throughput of 7,951 TEUs.

Port of Antwerp International has been appointed by the Council of Ministers of the West African country of Benin to modernise the port of Cotonou. This port is the economic heart of Benin, handling an annual freight volume of around 12 million tonnes.

Ningbo-Zhoushan port, the busiest port in China, saw an annual cargo throughput of 1 billion tonnes, becoming the first one  globally to reach this volume, according to data provided by the port.
