Germany's Port of Kiel continues to achieve growth in passenger traffic, reaching an increase of 4.2% with 2.2 million travellers. In the meantime, the port's cargo sector experienced a decrease of 3.5% to 7.15 tonnes of cargo in 2018. The port hosted, during 2018, 169 cruise ship visits. The number is 143 more in comparison to 2017, reaching a 15.3% increase.

Ecodelta, a new trailing suction hopper (TSHD), run by LNG, was christened on January 11 in the Dutch port of Rotterdam. The dredging vessel is the key component of the new contract entered into force by Bagger & Aannemingsmaatschappij Van der Kamp and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has entered into a preliminary collaboration agreement with financial institution Cassa depositi e prestiti (CDP) and natural gas infrastructure company Snam, aiming to implement medium-term strategic projects for the innovation of port facilities in Italy and of sustainable technologies applied to maritime transport.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore with US $2.4 million to repower marine engines and upgrade equipment that is used to move cargo to reduce emissions at the port. The EPA funding comes from a 'Diesel Emission Reduction Act' grant.

Trading company Toyota Tsusho and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation are joining forces on a port project in Angola that will be the largest of its kind for Japanese businesses, according to Nikkei Asian Review. Both companies aim to raising 70 billion yen ($643 million) from public and private lenders in Japan. Their goal is to help the African fund the effort. 

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards and South Louisiana Methanol CEO Paul Moore announced to pursue a $2.2 billion capital investment in a new methanol complex –one of the world’s largest methanol production sites– to be located in the Port of South Louisiana district, according to the port's statement.

In its latest update, the Port of Amsterdam informed that construction activities on the site of the new sea lock in IJmuiden are in full swing. More than 200,000 m3 of concrete have now been poured and still more will be poured in January and February, including concrete for the inner lock head and for the lock chamber.

Port Master Plans outline strategic goals, operational initiatives and environmental policies, and evaluate the consistency of future developments and land uses with those goals, initiatives and policies. The Master Plan covers a Harbor District of nearly 2,700 acres of land and more than 4,500 acres of water. The current Master Plan divides the Harbor District into 10 planning districts and identifies permitted land and water uses.

The British Ports Association is looking at barriers and benefits UK ports are facing beyond Brexit concerning 2019. BPA's promoting port sectors, increasing  public transport investment, planning improvements and issues about people and safety will be some of the priorities set for all ports across the UK.

KIZAD, which is an industrial zone and part of Abu Dhabi Ports, announced the launch of the KIZAD Polymers Park, which is expected to form an integral part of the UAE’s polymers conversion ecosystem. The new park will benefit Abu Dhabi's positions as a development and innovative hub in sustainability and technology, including advanced polymer technologies such as composites and 3D printing.
