Thailand welcomes its first largest container terminal

Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT), the largest container terminal operator in the area, has opened Terminal D at Laem Chabang Port. The opening ceremony for the USD 600 million facility took place on January 30. Terminal D is the first terminal in Thailand to handle some of the largest ocean-going vessels. When completed, the terminal is to have a total quay length of 1.700 metres, with 17 Super Post-Panamax quay cranes and 43 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes all using remote control technology.

Nauru partners to construct climate-resilient port

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the governments of Australia and Nauru participated in a ceremony on January 30 to officially mark the first step toward the construction of Nauru’s first international port. Financed by ADB, GCF, and the governments of Australia and Nauru, the Nauru Sustainable and Climate Resilient Connectivity Project will upgrade the largely unworkable boat harbor into an international port.

East and West Libya govs unite on mega port project

Libya's East and West authorities have formally united for the construction of North Africa’s automated and largest deep-sea ports near the city of Susah in Libya. Specifically, the Port of Susah, a major international trans-shipment hub container port, will be a crossroad in North Africa for mainline cargo vessels traveling to and from Asia and Europe via the Suez Canal, as well as to and from the United States.

Watch: New Zealand’s Port of Newcastle joins EcoPorts

Port of Newcastle has become the first port in Australia or New Zealand to commit to meeting global environmental and sustainability standards as set by EcoPorts. The port was this month granted membership of the International EcoPorts network, having completed assessments to benchmark its environmental and sustainability practices against 120 major ports across Europe, Asia, North America and South America.

First door for the new sea lock arrived in IJmuiden

On January 20, the first out of three doors of the new sea lock arrived in IJmuiden, as Port of Amsterdam stated in its press release. The door was transmitted to its final destination by a tugboat across the North Sea. With a stopover on the Second Maasvlakte, the door has covered more than 26,000 km between South Korea and IJmuiden. The transport over the last 80 km took 30 hours and went smoothly.
