The Virginia International Gateway (VIG) completed another step in its expansion project as it launched operations at its container stack No. 1. The end of the stack-yard work leaves only two projects to be completed before the entire $320 million effort comes to an end in June.

Ports of Genoa, one of Europe’s busiest trade hubs, has become the 40th member of the International Port Community Systems Association (IPCSA). The port authority has joined the organization to support its integration of ‘Port Community Systems’, as well as enhancing and developing new functions and modules.

Port of Oakland announced that it will be getting new cranes to handle the latest generation of megaships. The Port stated that its largest marine terminal would install three 300-foot-tall gantry cranes in late 2020.

Port of Hamburg, Germany's largest universal port, handled 135.1 million tonnes of seaborne cargoes during 2018, falling 1% in comparison to 2017. Yet, the railborne seaport-hinterland transport accounted for an overall of 46.8 million tonnes, increasing by 2.7% and 2.44 million TEU, equal to 4.7%. 

The Port of Great Yarmouth, that belongs to Peel Ports Group, has taken delivery of a new state of the art crane giving it greater capabilities to handle larger cargoes on the east coast. The new crane with a 84 t lifting capacity will enable the port’s customers to further utilise its 24-hour deep-water facility which is able to handle larger volumes of bulk and unitised cargo.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s largest container port, has presented a new round of strategic initiatives as part of its plans to drive a next phase of inclusive growth and transformation. 

The Congress announced, on February 13, that the American Association of Ports Authorities will fund US port-related programs, in the Consolidated Appropriations Act. Important for the AAPA is the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies funding for a dedicated port infrastructure program in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration.

Philippines-based International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has inaugurated the newly-expanded Batumi International Container Terminal (BICT) in Georgia. The multipurpose terminal includes the waterside and landside areas, aiming to optimize the process of existing cargo flows and installing additional capacity.

According to Asian Terminals Inc., they are seeking to expand their services beyond the international gateway ports in Manila and Batangas to improve logistics cycles for manufacturers, shippers and transporters in support of the country’s growing economy. The projects are to help the terminal accomplish greater operational synergies, helping the industry cope with logistic barriers and also enable them create growth opportunities in the future.

The Port of Kalama awarded the contract for the Port T-barge Facility Project to Bergerson Construction on December 2018. The project that will take place at the north end of the marina, will begin the following week. The project includes Washington sales tax, the removal of steel and timber piles and the placing of new steel piles to prepare for placement of the T-barge bought by the Port for the creation of a commercial dock space.
