NASSCO holds keel laying ceremony of first ECO tanker for APT

General Dynamics NASSCO hosted a keel laying ceremony for the first ECO tanker for American Petroleum Tankers (APT) under construction at the company's shipyard in San Diego. San Diego’s First Lady, Mrs. Katherine Faulconer, was the honoree for the ceremony. San Diego’s First Lady authenticated the keel of the first ECO tanker for APT by welding her initials onto a steel plate during the ceremony. The steel plate with her initials will be permanently affixed to the ship's keel and will remain with the vessel throughout its time in service. Her husband, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer who was present at today’s ceremony, cut the first piece of steel used to build the ship during the vessel’s start of construction ceremony in September 2014. The ECO tanker is the first of a five-tanker contract between General Dynamics NASSCO and APT, which calls for the design and construction of five 50,000 deadweight ton, LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. Port of San Diego continues Green Port sustainability efforts

The Port of San Diego continued efforts to align with its role as environmental steward throughout the year, providing a review of notable 2014 climate and energy achievements to the Board of Port Commissioners on December 9, 2014, in support of the Climate Action Plan. The plan incorporates economic, social and environmental considerations into business decisions and planning, and provides goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions moving forward; it was adopted by the Commission in December of 2013. The Port has achieved over 50% of its 2020 goal for greenhouse gas emissions reduction. "The Climate Action Plan captures all of the Port's energy conservation efforts, and ensures we are integrating Green Port values into our daily operations," said Port Chairman Bob Nelson. "Our 2014 achievements have given us a great head start on reducing our footprint and achieving our long-term environmental stewardship goals." Climate Action Plan Implementation The Board authorized an agreement with Environ International in the amount of $88,000 to provide technical assistance to the Port which will allow continued implementation of the Climate Action Plan and completion of the update to the Port's greenhouse gas inventory. Port's Green Port Program The Port of San Diego has been recognized for its work as an environmental steward.The Port's Green Port Program won first place in the category of Comprehensive Environmental Management Plan at the 4th annual WorkBoat Environmental Awards. The awards were presented during the 32nd International WorkBoat Show on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 in New Orleans, Louisiana.The Port of San Diego was the only entrant representing the public sector and was the first public sector winner in the four-year history of the awards.The International WorkBoat Show is the largest commercial marine tradeshow in North America serving people and businesses working on the coastal, inland and offshore waters.
