The Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) and other maritime players are against the Oakand A's planned baseball stadium complex on the Oakland waterfront. They support that the Port of Oakland is the fifth busiest port in the US, and the non-industrial use of it will bring barriers for maritime operators.

The Port of Oakland announced that it will add new, directive service to Vietnam by late April. Pacific International Lines (PIL) will launch direct Vietnam links using vessels that can carry up to 11,900 twenty-foot containers. PIL’s new service is called AC5 and is in partnership with Cosco and Wan Hai.

The Port of Oakland reported a positive first quarter, as the March container volumes increased by 10% in comparison to same month last year. This rise can be attributed to the fact that shippers are trying to get ahead of potential new tariffs in the US-China trade war. Until the end of March, the Port handled 612,151 TEUs, compared to 587,356 TEUs during the same period in 2018. This is a 4.2% increase.

Port of Oakland announced its plans for a greener containerized cargo handling. The port stated that its largest marine terminal is converting 13 diesel-powered yard cranes to hybrid power. The result is expected to be an annual 45-ton reduction in diesel-related air pollutants.

Port of Oakland announced that it will be getting new cranes to handle the latest generation of megaships. The Port stated that its largest marine terminal would install three 300-foot-tall gantry cranes in late 2020.

A $67 million waterfront expansion concluded at the Port of Oakland during January. Specifically, the TraPac marine terminal opened its newest vessel berth to arriving container ships. The milestone signals the completion of a 2-year project at Oakland’s second-largest terminal. TraPac started its new era in Oakland in January when the container vessel Bay Bridge tied up at Berth 25.

More ships than ever are switching to landside electricity at the Port of Oakland to cut emissions. According to the Port, 75% of all ships visiting in 2018 used so-called shore power. That was up from 68% the year before. Specifically, 1,543 ships tied up in Oakland during 2018. Of those, 1,157 plugged into the landside grid to power onboard systems.

Port of Oakland container volume achieved an all-time high in 2018. Specifically, the Port handled the equivalent of 2.55 million 20-foot containers last year. An increase of 5.2% from 2017. This was the second year in a row that the Port of Oakland achieves a record volume.

The Port of Oakland informed that it had its busiest November ever for imports in 2018, shattering an 11-year-old record. The Port handled the equivalent of 83,364 loaded 20-foot import containers last month. In fact, November imports increased 15% over the same period in 2017.

California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company paid a total of $630,625 in penalties to the California Air Resources Board for breaching the Ocean-Going Vessel At-Berth regulation.
