While the voting procedure for the 2019 GREEN4SEA Awards is open, Mr. Andreas Slotte, Head of Sustainable Development, Port of Helsinki, says that the port has been very active in sustainable development for which it has been nominated in the ‘Port’ category among other distinguished nominees. Mr Slotte notes that a ‘win-win situation’ where energy savings benefit both the environment and the income statement can be achieved; in this regard, change in mindset and the current business model are needed.

The Port of Helsinki noted a record year in 2018, with a total of 14.7 million tonnes of goods, noting an increase of 3.3% compared to the previous year, while it maintained its position as the busiest passenger port in Europe, with a higher than ever number of international cruise tourists. 

The Ice-class passenger ferry Suomenlinna II was remotely piloted through test area near Helsinki harbour. This was the world’s first remote trial for an existing passenger ferry, which aimed to prove that human oversight of vessels remotely is achievable with today’s technologies.

The EU has approved a EUR 21.4 million funding for infrastructure upgrade at the Estonian port of Tallinn and Finnish port of Helsinki, together with the City of Helsinki and the passenger ship operators Tallink, Viking Line and Eckerö Line. The total cost of the planned investments is EUR 71.2 million.

In 2017 Helsinki became the busiest passenger port in Europe and possibly the world, carrying  12.3 million passengers. Passenger numbers continued to increase on the Helsinki-Tallinn route in particular, reflecting the development of Helsinki and Tallinn into 'twin cities'.
