The Danish Maritime Authority informed that 29 countries from the Paris MoU and the Tokyo Mou have signed a new Ministerial Declaration on port State control, which has been under preparation for three years. The declaration stipulates new goals for port State control and for cooperation on port State control.

ABS has facilitated a Polar Code Operational Assessment in terms of the implementation of the IMO Polar Code. Specifically, the assessment identifies operational risks and limitations and was performed with TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. company in undersea communications technology, on its cable-laying vessel, Responder.

With the Polar Code now in force, Thordon Bearings has urged shipowners and managers to verify that their vessels’ deck machinery and systems can operate safely in the extreme temperatures encountered in Arctic and Antarctic seas.

Attending the Senior Arctic Officials Meeting in Juneau, Alaska,on 8-9 March, IMO Secretary General, Kitack Lim, noted the great controversy between economic development and increasing commercial activity in the Arctic region and highlighted the importance of good collaboration between IMO and the Arctic Council in Polar Code development.

IMO announced that Polar Code took centre stage at the Arctic Council in Juneau, Alaska,on 8-9 March, where IMO Secretary-General, Kitack Lim, delivered a speech on the importance of the Code and highlighted the safety of seafarers and the environmental protection as key elements of the Code.

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim experienced polar conditions at first hand during a recent visit to Antarctica from 8 through 12 February and discussed the relevance of the Polar Code to ships operating in the polar regions and the need to promote safe and sustainable shipping.

Eimskip and Royal Arctic Line (RAL) have signed an agreement to share capacity, and together ordered three new containerships to be built in China. The new vessels will have an ice class and will be designed in accordance with the Polar Code.

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim spoke to delegates at the Arctic Frontiers conference about new regulations for ships operating in polar waters, on 23 January.

Peter Broadhurst, Inmarsat Senior VP Safety and Security Services highlights that safety in the most remote waters is always a priority for Inmarsat which is the only provider of satellite communications technology approved under the IMO’s GMDSS.

The mandatory Polar Code, for ships operating in Arctic and Antarctic waters, entered into force on 1 January 2017. Its requirements go above and beyond those of existing IMO conventions such as MARPOL and SOLAS, which are applicable globally and will still apply to shipping in polar waters.
