Almost three-quarters of all new container ships, which emit around a quarter of global ship CO2 emissions, already comply with the post-2025 requirements of the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index, according to a new study issued by Transport and Environment. 

DNV GL issued its Energy Outlook report for 2017, to provide an understanding of the energy future, emphasizing that, over the next three decades, the world’s energy system will decarbonize and change in many ways. 

Port of Rotterdam cited a series of objectives and initiatives to achieve sustainability until 2050. The initiatives are related to Paris Agreement signing, promotion of LNG as a marine fuel, heat alliance, waste recycling, among others.

The European Environmental Bureau published an assessment of the performance of the Maltese Presidency of the EU, in relation to environmental issues. The assessment based on Ten Green Tests showed that Malta has performed well in relation to nature protection, but badly when it comes to measures to tackle climate change or transform energy system.

The Port of Seattle joined the national coalition "We Are Still In", the alliance focused on meeting the greenhouse gas reduction goals of the Paris Agreement to combat climate change. The Port’s emission reduction goals mirror those in the Paris Agreement: a 50-percent reduction by 2030 and a 100-percent-or-more reduction by 2050, compared to 2005 emission levels.

The International Association of Ports and Harbors announced that it actively supports the development of a comprehensive global strategy on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions both from land-based and maritime sources, in line with the Paris climate goals. As IAPH explains, ports worldwide are vulnerable to the effects of climate change, such as sea level rise and extreme weather conditions.

Responding at the recent call of the four international trade associations at IMO for ambitious CO2 reductions from shipping, leading analysts and a coalition of clean shipping groups warned that the industry is finally sailing in the right direction on climate change but far too slowly.

Despite the EU and China have reacted to US president Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the US from the Paris climate accord by agreeing to cooperate in tackling climate change, Transport and Environment organisation has expressed fears the US withdrawal will slow down progress in shipping.

Statoil issued the 7th edition of its Energy Perspectives report, intended to provide an assessment of long-term perspectives on the international energy market. The report shows substantial future changes in the global energy mix and it describes three different scenarios for global macroeconomic development, energy demand, energy mix, and energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.

Following the decision of the United States to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, the European Community Shipowners' Associations and the International Chamber of Shipping encourage the intention of the European Union and the People's Republic of China to intensify cooperation in achieving a global climate deal for shipping.
