Wind and solar are set to surge to almost “50 by 50” – 50% of world generation by 2050 – on the back of precipitous reductions in cost, and the advent of cheaper and cheaper batteries that will enable electricity to be stored and discharged to meet shifts in demand and supply, said BNEF in its New Energy Outlook 2018.

DNV GL unveiled the final reports in a study which demonstrates the commercial and technical feasibility of the offshore wind market In India. Co-funded by the European Union, GPCL and ReNew Power, the FOWIND project is intended to enable organisations to make future investments in the region.

The power sector is the single biggest market for energy, absorbing over 40% of primary energy in 2017, and leading the energy transition, through renewables and electrification, according to BP's Statistical Review of World Energy. Renewables accounted for almost half of the growth in power generation (49%).

The US Department of Energy selected the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to grant an $18.5 million offshore wind research and development consortium. The consortium will gather industry, academia, government and other stakeholders to advance offshore wind plant technologies.

Norwegian energy minister Terje Soeviknes will have meeting with companies on Wednesday, June 20, with the target to explore the possibility of constructing offshore floating wind farms. Terje Soeviknes wants to finalize the discussions within a few months. Namely, he stated that he is hoping to have proposal by autumn.

Race Bank, a new offshore wind farm capable of powering over half a million UK homes, officially opened at a ceremony in Grimsby, on 12 June. Race Bank is capable of generating 573 MW from its 91 Siemens Gamesa 6 MW wind turbines. Located off North Norfolk, it is UK’s largest offshore wind O&M base. 

German EnBW will develop an offshore wind project off the coast of Central California. Namely, EnBW and Trident Winds will create a 650–1,000 megawatt 'Morro Bay' wind farm with a grid connection in Morro Bay. The focus of the joint venture is to obtain the site lease and then secure the grid connection.

This new system synchronises the wind turbines without using any additional element, since it uses the wind turbines' capacity to contribute to voltage and frequency control. A key aspect of the project is the use of diode rectifier stations, which reduces the cost of the offshore rectifier platform by up to 30%. 

Canada is about to become a member of the International Renewable Energy Agency after confirming its intention to begin the membership applications process. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, Kim Rudd, made the announcement during the ninth Clean Energy Ministerial in Copenhagen.

According to a report by IRENA, as the offshore wind power generation is spreading amongst the world, international standards can help surpass market barriers and drive further deployment. The report says that today the international standards are a reflection of European weather and sea conditions and an evolution is necessary to ensure that they are applicable to other areas as well.
