When a ship is arriving in a port, it is considered as a high-risk activity. The dangers of this operation can be reduced by correct planning and making sure that the vessel's crew knows about the port's or terminal's requirements. For this reason, OCIMF published the 'Marine Terminal Information Booklet'.

OCIMF released the information paper ‘A Guide to Best Practice for Navigational Assessments and Audits’ which will help vessel owners, operators and Masters to identify opportunities for improvement on the safety onboard and the protection of the environment through navigational assessments and audits.

Seafarers work in highly risk environments, where skills and abilities play a key role in performance at both individual and organizational level. Competencies can be difficult to assess. As such, OCIMF and Intertanko issued a report presenting a system for assessing competency in seafarers.

OCIMF released the information paper 'Sharing Lessons Learned from Incidents' that encourages vessel operators to use three different levels of sharing the lessons learned from incidents.

Reviewing the guidance, there are two issues that may require more clarification for the operators: The first issue refers to the maximum breaking load that a line should have in order to be purchased. The second issue refers to the retirement of a line (or supportive equipment as tails)

The North P&I Club shared an insight discussing autonomous cargo systems as a means to address the oft-blamed 'human error' in accident reports. The Club suggests that linked ESD systems should be used for oil and chemical transfers, including ship-to-ship transfers.

The fourth edition has been extensively updated and addresses: Lessons learned from incidents, most notably from failures of HMSF mooring lines; Human centred mooring designs and human factors in mooring operations; New and in-development regulations and guidance from the IMO on the safety of mooring; Alternative mooring technologies and how they can be incorporated safely into the design of mooring systems both for ships and terminals.

OCIMF released the information paper 'Guidelines to Harden Vessels', in which it recommends a layered defence methodology for hardening vessels to help prevent unauthorised boarding. This includes six defence layers, while training and ship design play a major part in securing a vessel.

International shipping industry organisations have launched a new website to provide maritime security guidance to companies and mariners. The new website www.maritimeglobalsecurity.org provides security guidance, which the industry supplies, as well as links to  useful maritime and military security resources. 

Cyber security threats are not only increased, but they are becoming a part of maritime daily business. Therefore, it is important all industry’s stakeholders to understand the threat landscape, consider the given guidelines and comply with the upcoming legislation in order to be fully prepared to address the associated challenges.
