How to prevent failures due to anchor windlass machinery

Following many incidents due to anchor machinery failures, OCIMF and INTERTANKO recommend measures in an effort to enhance anchor windlass safety. Stellar Voyager incident involving crew injury is a typical example of these failures. UK MAIB report has found that the most likely cause of this failure was over-pressurisation of the system due to the reversal of the hydraulic motor as the chain rendered.

TMSA 3 to be released next week

The third edition of the Tanker Management and Self Assessment – A Best Practice Guide (TMSA 3) will be available from Monday 10th of April. The new version is extended in length (+23% in terms of words) compared with the TMSA 2 with the key focus now being shifted to implementation as the vast majority of the ambiguities of the TMSA 2 has now been cleared.

OCIMF is planning a TMSA3 release within 2017

In 2014, the OCIMF General Purposes Committee approved a periodic review of the Tanker Management & Self Assessment (TMSA) publication, in order to bring it up to date with current legislation, new technologies and current best Industry practices. OCIMF have recognised that many companies currently implement a satisfactory TMSA system, and it was determined that a light touch be applied when reviewing the publication.
