Russia eyes the construction of three ‘Lider class’ nuclear icebreakers, between 2023 and 2025, to enable commercial traffic in the Arctic's Northern Sea Route in any season. These vessels are planned to be at the disposal of Russia’s major natural gas projects on Yamal Peninsula.

The climate change and the warming of Arctic seas as a result, have opened the Northern Sea Route as an alternative for more trading routes between Europe and Asia Pacific, an information paper by OCIMF notes. The paper also outlines the challenges and best practices that operators must consider when passing through NSR.

The icebreaking LNG carrier 'Christophe de Margerie' completed her first loading of LNG cargo at the Port of Sabetta, on the Yamal Peninsular. The ship is the first in a series of 15 icebreaking LNG carriers ordered for Yamal LNG project, to transport LNG year-round in the challenging ice conditions of the Kara Sea and Gulf of Ob.

Northern Sea Route has driven shipping cargo traffic in the Arctic this year, with large Russian as well as foreign ship owners using the route. Interim results for 2017 show that the Northern Sea Route navigation is generally successful, with cargo traffic totaling 7,925,861 tonnes and recording an 8.3% growth as of 1 November.

During a meeting that Vladimir Putin held, the Russian President touched upon the issue of the development, construction and the further development of the shipbuilding complex Zvezda, located on the Northern Sea Route.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. confirmed that China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited will take an equity stake in the MOL wholly owned subsidiary that will own four LNG carriers serving the Russia Yamal LNG project.

Russian natural gas producer PAO NOVATEK has signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Kamchatka Territorial Government, on building a sea terminal facility for reloading liquefied natural gas at Kamchatka.

Rosneft's subsidiary, Rosnefteflot signed an agreement with Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex for the construction of ten Arctic shuttle tankers with 42,000t deadweight each. The tankers will transport crude produced at Paiyakhskoe field from the mouth of Enisey river along the Northern Sea Route.

Chinese company COSCO has expressed interest for trans-Arctic shipping, hoping that the development of a deep-water port on the Northern Dvina River will enable them to bring in big-tonnage ships and increase shipping volumes. 

The new nuclear-powered ship is part of Russia's Project 22220, which aims to renew the national fleet of nuclear icebreakers.The vessel and its sister "Arktika", launched in June last year, are expected to become the largest and most powerful icebreakers in the world, as they are capable of breaking ice up to three meters thick.
