A large team of scientists, equipped with advanced underwater robotics and two research vessels, will set sail for the northeastern Pacific Ocean this August. NASA and the National Science Foundation will study the lifecycle of small organisms that play a critical role in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and in the ocean’s carbon cycle.

Ice losses from Antarctica have tripled since 2012, increasing global sea levels by 0.12 inch in that timeframe alone, according to a new study by NASA and the European Space Agency. The study showed that ice losses from Antarctica are causing sea levels to rise faster today than at any time in the past 25 years. 

NASA exercised options according to the Rapid Spacecraft Acquisition III contract for two Joint Polar Satellite System. JPSS satellites will collect global, multi-spectral radiometry and other specialized meteorological, oceanographic data through remote sensing of land, sea and atmospheric properties.

In an innovative study, scientists have combined a number of NASA satellite observations of Earth with data on human activities to map locations where freshwater is changing around the globe and to determine why. The study, published in the journal Nature, finds that Earth’s wet land areas are getting wetter and dry areas are getting drier.

The US Government decided to cut NASA's Carbon Monitoring System, a $10-million-a-year research. This project was tracking GHG emissions around the world and was reporting the carbon flows. As the Science Magazine reported, this development is putting the country's compliance with the Paris Agreement at risk.

A study conducted by NASA, based on an innovative technique for crunching torrents of satellite data, provided a clear picture of changes in Antarctic ice flow into the ocean. The findings confirm increased ice losses from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The new work provides a baseline for measurement of Antarctic ice changes.

Some of the pollution particles generated by ships are soluble in water and serve as the seeds around which cloud droplets form. Clouds filled with ship exhaust have more and smaller droplets. This caused the light hitting the clouds scatter and NASA has released an image illustrating to appear brighter.

US Navy's amphibious transport dock USS Anchorage successfully completed test recovery operations of NASA's Orion test article, on Jan. 23. A part of a US government effort to safely retrieve the Orion crew module, which is capable of carrying humans into deep space. 

The planet’s average surface temperature has increased about 2 degrees Fahrenheit, a little more than 1 degree Celsius, during the last century, mostly because of increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.
