The IMO's MEPC 76 took place virtually from 10 to 17 June 2021, adopting amendments to MARPOL Annex VI that will require ships to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the 2018 Initial IMO Strategy. The meeting also adopted an HFO ban for ships in Arctic. Both decisions were seen as inadequate by green groups and a significant part of the industry. 

During the last day of MEPC 76, the IMO adopted a ban on the use of HFO in the Arctic region amid a wide criticism by green groups claiming loopholes in the regulations which will allow many vessels to keep sailing without enough regulatory control.

The IMO MEPC 76 adopted a 2% annual ship CO2 intensity reduction target between 2023-2026, representing an estimated 11% improvement by 2026 compared to 2019 levels, a decision that encountered strong opposition by green groups and major states. 

On the occasion of MEPC 76 underway in London, innovation company TECO 2030 urged the IMO to recognize the role of carbon capture in reducing GHG emissions from international shipping, "as not enough vessels will undergo fuel switches to meet the climate targets".

The 76th session of IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 76) kicked off virtually on 10 June, expected to adopt amendments to cut the carbon intensity of ships by 40% by 2030. 

Without decisive government signals, declining levels of maritime research and development could jeopardize the shipping industry's ability to decarbonize, warned the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) ahead the IMO's MEPC 76 meeting starting this week. 

Concerns about fuel quality impacting on ship safety in the run-up to the IMO 2020 sulphur limit has led to the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee to take on an agenda item called “Development of further measures to enhance the safety of ships relating to the use of oil fuel.”

The Port of Seattle, Port of Tacoma, and the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) have written a joint letter urging the US delegation to show strong action for reducing international maritime GHG emissions and underwater noise during negotiations at the upcoming IMO MEPC 76.
