The Panama Canal participated in the IMO's MEPC 71, where members of the Panama delegation spoke with industry specialists about the industry's impact on the environment and participated in two working group meetings, one on the reduction of GHG emissions, and another on further measures for enhancing the energy efficiency of international shipping.

Commenting on the outcome of last week’s meeting of the IMO MEPC, the International Chamber of Shipping announced that it is pleased with the progress made by IMO Member States on a number of critical environmental regulatory issues that will have a profound impact on the future structure of the global shipping industry.

IMO's 71st session of Marine Environment Protection Committee, held in IMO headquarters in London this week, promoted Europe's first training centre for LNG professionals, according to UK Embassy of Spain.

World Maritime University and Nippon Foundation announced that they operationalize the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute, starting from July 6th. The Ocean Institute will be the independent focal point for ocean- science-policy-law-industry interface, where industry representatives meet to discuss how to manage and use ocean spaces.

At the IMO MEPC 71 being held in London this week, a joint coalition of Pacific Island ministers addressed a global urge to the shipping industry to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The call was an urge towards IMO member states to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees celsius above pre-industrial levels.

MEPs participating in the 71th session of the MEPC of the IMO in London gave their views on the ongoing talks on Wednesday, 5 July. Among others, European Parliament delegation leader, José Inácio Faria, noted that if the IMO does not present a global solution to reduce shipping emissions, the EU will have to set up its own scheme.

MEPC 71 considers for ships constructed on or after September 8, 2017 to comply with the D-2 standard on or after September 8, 2017. However, for the existing ships, MEPC 71 is about to approve a two-year delay, according to an Interim Brief provided by ABS.
