A bosun who was rigging an accommodation ladder on a 265-metre cargo ship, ended up lost at sea when the steel wire securing his safety harness to the ship suddenly snapped. In its latest Lookout! release, Maritime New Zealand presented the case and important safety issues.

There are rules on the water, just as there are rules on the road. Maritime New Zealand reminds operators that they should know and understand these rules before heading out, ahead of the boating season.

In view of the alcohol conviction of a cargo ship’s master, on 7 August, Maritime New Zealand’s Northern Regional Manager, Neil Rowarth, reminded seafarers that "safety is paramount", and any crew found over the alcohol limit will be prosecuted.

Maritime New Zealand issued an infographic, focusing on seafarers' fatigue, as the root cause of many marine accidents. A number of things can lead to fatigue, including long or irregular work hours, sleep disruption, extreme environmental conditions, physical and mental work demands, and stress.

Maritime New Zealand informs about techniques that everyone could do, in order to improve chances of survival in cold water. Wearing warm clothes and lifejackets, avoiding alcohol and keeping a conscious, not-panicked mind are some of the advice included.

On June 1st, Maritime New Zealand and the NZ Federation of Commercial Fishermen launch a safety campaign, at the Federation’s annual conference, aimed at commercial fishing boat crews and operators. The "Safe Crews Fish More" aims to establish a natural collaboration across the industry.

On May 29, an Auckland ferry company, Fullers Group, was fined $40,000 and ordered to pay reparations of $90,000, after passengers were injured when the Auckland ferry Kea collided with Victoria wharf at Devonport on 17 February 2015, Maritime New Zealand informed.

Maritime NZ, the national regulatory agency for the safety and environmental protection of coastal and inland waterways of New Zealand, announced that Cook Strait passenger ferry, the "Straitsman" is the first ship of the country to be certified under the international Maritime Labour Convention.

Ports of Auckland Ltd (POAL) has been fined $49,980 and ordered to pay $12,000 in reparations after a stevedore employed by the company fell nearly 3m off the unguarded edge of a hatch lid, leaving him temporarily unconscious and fracturing his elbow.

Maritime New Zealand reminds that ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) will apply to New Zealand ships from 9 March 2017. After this date, Maritime NZ will be able to inspect for compliance with the Convention on foreign-flagged ships in New Zealand ports.
