The Ghana Maritime Authority has called for a national document to step up maritime security activities in the country. The call came when National members of the joint Maritime Security committee visited stakeholder agencies to ask for interagency views at creating a national maritime framework to protect the Ghanaian waters.

As piracy increases in the world's oceans, maritime safety requires a collaborative effort to ensure safety of lives and protection of property at sea. Under this, the Ghana Maritime Authority organized a 4-Day Crisis Response Training for security experts and players in the maritime sector, from 9 to 12 of July.

In order to limit maritime crime on the Gulf of Guinea waters, and especially piracy and sea robbery, the Nigerian Navy along with France, China, Portugal, Cameroon, Ghana and Togo conducted a maritime exercise named Exercise EKU KEGBE, of which 12 Nigerian Navy ships and ships from the other countries were deployed.

The new edition of Stable Seas Maritime Security Index is released, attempting to measure and map good maritime governance around sub-Saharan Africa. This edition covers 30 exclusive economic zones around sub-Saharan Africa from the mid-Atlantic to the Gulf of Aden.

A workshop has taken place in Sri Lanka, Colombo, on 18-20 June, where maritime law experts and practitioners from around the world met to participate in two main sessions aimed at gathering State practice and interpretation information related to international legal instruments. 

UN-trained law enforcement units have intercepted huge shipments of illegal drugs being trafficked through seaports this year, under the Container Control Programme, jointly launched in 2003 by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Customs Organization.

USCG offloaded about 36,000 pounds of cocaine Tuesday, which was seized during a counter-drug patrol in international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The contraband represents 17 interdictions of suspected smuggling vessels off the coasts of Central and South America by five USCG cutters, between early February and early March.

Dirk Steffen, director of Maritime Security at Risk Intelligence, analyzes the increase of maritime security incidents for 2016 over the previous year. Denmark-based Risk Intelligence counted 119 verified attacks by criminals on all kinds of vessels in West Africa – compared with 82 in 2015. The vast majority of attacks were perpetrated by Nigerian criminals, including all of the 84 that were concentrated in and around Nigerian waters.
