Booming local shipping industry is crucial for Malaysia's international commerce Malaysia needs 43,000 seamen for the booming local shipping industry which is crucial for her international commerce.Malaysian Marine Department director-general Datuk Capt Ahmad Othman said, currently, there were 49,000 local seamen in the local shipping industry while another 43,000 places were filled by foreign seamen.He said this to reporters after launching the 2012 National Seaman Day Celebration, here, Monday.He said among the benefits that could be obtained as a seaman was visiting foreign countries, wherever and wherever their ships docked, without needing visas.They only use their Seafarers' Identity Documents issued by the Marine Department, valid for five years for local seamen, and one year for foreign nationals working on Malaysian ships, he said.Source: BERNAMA

The 300 meter-long and 60 meter-wide FLNG facility will be located offshore Malaysia Technip, in a consortium with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) Co. Ltd., the Technip-Daewoo Consortium (TDC), was awarded by Petronas Floating LNG 1 (Labuan) Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) a services contract for engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning for floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility of 1.2 million ton per year maximun capacity. The 300 meter-long and 60 meter-wide FLNG facility will be located offshore Malaysia. The contract is an Alliance between TDC, led by Technip, and Petronas. Technip's portion is composed of project management services and lump sum for engineering.The detailed design of the topsides(1) will be executed by Technip's operating centers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Paris, France. Engineering of the hull and building of the FLNG facility will take place at Daewoo's shipyard in Okpo, South Korea. The tankers attempted to transfer 130,000 liters of illegal fuel Two vessels have been seized by the Southern Region of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). The ships are believed by authorities to have been attempting to transfer 130,000 liters of illegal fuel in the waters near Pengerang. The Malaysian government has been trying to crack down on this issue for some time.Officials said that during operations carried out in early morning hours, an MMEA vessel detected the two ships coinciding suspiciously. Upon inspection, five members of the MT Urban Lima crew were transferring 130,000 liters of petrol to the MT 18 Heaven. During the inspection, almost 57,000 liters were transferred. Each captain failed to provide any documentation that allows oil transfer from ship to ship without permission.The MT Urban Lima is registered in Sierra Leone; the MT 18 Heaven is registered in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Both are being detained for further questioning and investigation. 22 crewmen have also been taken into custody, mainly Indonesians.Samples of the gasoline were taken to the Department of Chemistry in Johor to confirm the oil's status. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor handled 7.5M TEU in 2011, representing an increase of 15% over 2010, outperforming the reported global volume growth of 7%."This sharp increase was driven by strong organic growth from existing customers as well as volume from new customers," said Azlan Shahrim, Deputy CEO."Container volume from PTP's main existing customers, Maersk Line and Evergreen, increased by 16% over the previous year. The port has also seen new shipping lines during the year, including Hanjin and STX Pan Ocean of Korea, Mitsui and K-Line of Japan and China Shipping."From just two shipping lines in our early days, we now have 26 shipping lines and container operators. The tanker was carrying oil and gas worth of $4.6 million Malaysia maritime authorities have rescued a tanker and a barge which were hijacked in the latest South China Sea pirate attacks, according to officials. A tanker carrying oil and gas worth 14 million ringgit ($4.6 million) was hijacked Thursday in the Straits of Singapore, said Syed Mohamad Fuzi Syed Hasan, a regional operations director with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.Authorities located the Malaysian-registered MT Nautica Johor Bahru off the country's east coast Friday after an alert from the shipping company that the vessel was no longer contactable.Navy ships from Malaysia and neighbouring Indonesia managed to intercept the vessel in Indonesian waters though the pirates, about 10 men armed with a pistol and machetes, got away in a speedboat, Syed Mohamad Fuzi said.None of the 19 crew members was injured but their belongings were stolen.The tanker was on its way from peninsular Malaysia to Borneo island, he said.Meanwhile, authorities also rescued a barge with two crew and palm oil worth eight million ringgit on board Thursday off southern Malaysia, said maritime enforcement agency regional commander Zulkifli Abu Bakar.The barge was hijacked from a fishing boat in Indonesian waters Wednesday while ...
