Hadi Haghshenas, deputy director of maritime affairs in Iran, supported, during the closing ceremony of the 26th conference on coordination of marine organizations in Tehran, that they expect the government's support in favour of using low-sulfur fuel in the country's fleet over the next ten months.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service has moved to an agreement with Hitachi High-Tech, to offer the company's handheld XRF sulphur content analysers to the maritime market. This technology helps vessel crews test the sulphur content in their fuel in detail. Hitachi High-Tech’s XRF spectrometers offer upstream and downstream quality control, requiring little sample prep, minimal training and providing almost instantaneous, verifiable results.

Sinopec’s Shanghai refinery produced its first set of low-sulphur bunker fuel, amounting a total of 6,000 tonnes. The Shanghai refinery now became the first in China to produce low sulphur fuel oil, in order to comply with upcoming IMO rules. MEPC 72 adopted an initial strategy, which envisages, for the first time, a reduction in total GHG emissions from shipping which should peak as soon as possible and to reduce the total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008.

UK P&I Club issued a reminder for its members that from 1 January, 2019, all seagoing ships sailing in Chinese territorial waters will need to use fuel with a sulphur content of no higher than 0.5% m/m. This new regulation introduces some substantial changes to the existing ECA scheme previously announced by the Chinese authorities.

Speaking about the upcoming 2020 sulphur cap, Hapag-Lloyd said that this regulation will challenge the entire shipping industry. The company cites three ways to achieve compliance and notes that if this is achieved then the industry will become much greener.
