In its report on dealing with cargo fires, the Swedish Club has focused on cargo fires and explosion that can be caused by cargo hold lights presenting a case study of a bulker that caught fire after its cargo floodlights were not connected according to the approved ‘as built’ circuit diagrams.

On the occasion of Global Maritime Forum 2019 underway in Singapore, maritime leaders reiterated their common ambition to make the maritime industry safer, agreeing the industry Golden Safety Rules and ideas on how they could be implemented and used, as part of the ‘Together in Safety’ initiative.

DNV GL conducted a research on power failure investigation, following a fire at a large-scale South Korean energy storage facility, urging facility developers and operators to focus more on monitoring and prevention systems. DNV GL will conduct a follow-up assessment which will present criteria for bankability and validating remaining functionality of batteries after a fire.

Container fires may now be occurring on a weekly basis and in Gard’s experience most are associated with cargo misdeclaration. However just as with tackling the fire itself, tackling misdeclaration is a significant industry challenge. Thus, Mark Russell, Vice President, Head of Cargo Claims in London and  Charmaine Chu, Claims Executive in Hong Kong discuss the severity of cargo misdeclaration and the impact it has in the shipping market.

The Norwegian Maritime Authority issues an alert concerning a small fire that erupted in the battery room onboard Ytterøyningen passenger ferry and provides recommendations on dealing with unsafe situations onboard vessels.

The shipping industry does not need more regulation, but a more thorough understanding of the current regulations and a more efficient safety culture to implement the existing regulatory framework, especially when it comes to enclosed space entry, was a key message by shipping experts in the latest SAFETY4SEA Athens Forum.
