GTT announced an order for four large LNGCs (Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers).  The four ships will be built by the Korean shipbuilder DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering). These four LNGCs for Maran Gas are expected to be delivered between 2017 and 2019 and will be built with the innovative NO96-GW technology, which allows an optimized boil-off rate of cargo LNG. A series of four LNG carriers being built by the Hudong-Zhongua Shipbuilding yard in China will feature Wärtsilä LNG reliquefaction plants and gas handling systems. The ships are owned by Bermuda based Teekay Corporation, China LNG Shipping (CLNG), CNOOC Energy Technology Co of China, and BW Gas of Norway. The contracts with Wärtsilä were issued by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and were signed during the fourth quarter. The award of these contracts is a significant breakthrough into the Chinese market for Wärtsilä LNG reliquefaction plants and gas handling systems for LNG carriers, while at the same time emphasising the company’s position as the market leader in supplying these solutions. The Wärtsilä solutions will provide the owners with both economic and technical benefits. The reliquefaction plant will reliquefy 70% of the boil-off gas from the ships’ LNG cargo and return it to the cargo tanks, while the balance is fed by the gas handling system to the engines for propulsion purposes. The system is pre-fabricated in skid modules for easy onboard installation and hook-up. On 2 January 2015, the LNG carrier SCF Melampus was delivered to its shipowner during a ceremony at the shipyard of STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. This ship is the third in a series of ultra-modern LNG carriers designed to perform regular, year-round shipments of liquefied natural gas. Two ships in the series - the Velikiy Novgorod and Pskov are already successfully operating under long-term contracts with Gazprom. The fourth ship in the series - the SCF Mitre - will be handed over to Sovcomflot in the second quarter of 2015. Cutting-edge engineering solutions were used in the construction of the new Atlanticmax LNG tanker, with a load capacity of 170,200 cubic meters, to ensure its effective operation in Arctic conditions, including triple-fuel diesel electric propulsion plant. In addition to their reinforced Ice2 class, ships in this series are equipped to work in low temperatures and in harsh climatic conditions and are able to ship gas from most existing export terminals year-round. GE’s Power Conversion business announced that it had received a new order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. for electric power and propulsion systems for two LNG carriers. The LNG carriers will be built for the purpose of transporting LNG from Louisiana, USA. Their construction is scheduled to be completed from 2017 through 2018. From the perspective of improved performance, electric propulsion technology is optimal for LNG carriers. Golar LNG (Golar) announced that it has been awarded 2 time charters by Nigeria LNG Ltd (NLNG) to employ the recently delivered Golar Frost and Golar Crystal. Employment of both vessels under these contracts will commence in January 2015 and will continue for a duration of approximately 12 months for each vessel. NLNG has elected to retire earlier than planned 3 of its smaller and less efficient LNG Carriers and to replace these with Golar's more modern and technically advanced ships, while NLNG awaits the delivery of its own recently ordered new vessels. Golar LNG Limited announced that it is offering 7,170,000 common units, representing limited partner interests in Golar LNG Partners LP ("Golar Partners" or the "Partnership") as a selling unitholder in the public offering announced on January 8, 2015 by Golar Partners (the "Offering").  Golar intends to use the net proceeds of the Offering to fund a portion of the recently announced contract with Keppel Shipyard to convert one of its first generation LNG carriers, Gimi, into a floating natural gas liquefaction facility (GoFLNG).  These proceeds will be in addition to the net proceeds expected to be received over the next two years from the recently announced USD $390 million sale of the Golar Eskimo to Golar Partners when Golar Partners refinances the USD $220 million loan from Golar to be made in connection with the closing of the acquisition.  This will be Golar's second GoFLNG conversion project and long-lead items are in the process of being ordered. The International Transport Workers’ Federation has raised concerns about Flag-of-Convenience (FOC) vessels transporting highly dangerous cargoes around Australia’s coast and Great Barrier Reef. The first consignment of liquefied natural gas was transported out of Gladstone aboard a BG Group-chartered, FOC tanker called the Methane Rita Andrea. FOC ships are notorious for breaching safety and environmental codes internationally and are utilised by companies in an attempt to flout environmental, safety, labour and tax regulations worldwide. Two serious incidents occurred with FOC vessels off the UK coast: The Cemjford, a concrete carrier, sunk of the Scottish coast with all eight crew presumed dead. Meanwhile 25 crewmembers had a lucky escape when the FOC car carrier they were sailing on, the Hoegh Osaka, run aground between Southampton and the Isle of Wight. ITF Australia Coordinator Dean Summers said it was reckless that governments, in Australia and elsewhere, would allow this practice to continue in light of dangerous incidents that occur everyday. “LNG is possibly one of the most volatile substances that can be shipped and to ship gas out of Gladstone these vessels have to negotiate the Great Barrier Reef, yet we entrust this task to ships flagged in places like Liberia,” Summers ...

Sailing Route from the Cove Point LNG Project   TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.   announced that the company has concluded a basic agreement on a time charter contract for a newbuilding LNG carrier with Tokyo LNG Tanker Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. At the same time, MOL signed a contract with Japan Marine United Corporation  for construction of the new vessel. This is the third new vessel MOL will manage, following two other newbuilding LNG carriers sailing under contract with Tokyo LNG Tanker and built by JMU. These ships were launched on February 28 and November 28, 2014. The third vessel will also transport LNG from the Cove Point LNG Project in the United States to Tokyo Gas facilities. MOL is involved in operating 11 of 14 LNG carriers owned and managed by Tokyo LNG Tanker, including this newbuilding vessel, and directly manages eight of those 11 ships. BG Group, a world leader in exploration and LNG, has entered into an agreement with GasLog Ltd for them to acquire two modern tri-fuel diesel electric (“TFDE”) LNG carriers for proceeds of $460 million. BG Group will charter back the two vessels, the Methane Becki Anne and Methane Julia Louise, for nine and eleven years with further options to extend the term for each vessel by either three or five years. The transactions provide BG Group with flexibility in managing its future fleet requirements and, as the ships are currently managed by GasLog, leave day to day operations broadly unchanged. The LNG carriers are currently associated with a Pension Funding Partnership which is one element of the Group’s funding arrangements for the BG Pension Scheme. Consequently the majority of the proceeds from this sale will be utilised to support the funding of that scheme. The remaining net proceeds from the transaction of around $100m will be used to reduce the Group’s net debt. APT 2 Start of Construction ceremony General Dynamics NASSCO signaled the start of construction of a second “ECO” tanker to be built for American Petroleum Tankers at a steel cutting ceremony at NASSCO’s San Diego-based shipyard. U.S. Rep. Scott Peters signaled the beginning of construction by pressing a button to cut the first piece of steel. NASSCO began construction on the first tanker in September 2014. As part of a five-tanker contract, the new ECO tankers solidify a mutual commitment between General Dynamics NASSCO and American Petroleum Tankers to design, build and operate innovative and increased energy-efficient and fuel-saving products. Each of the five 50,000 deadweight ton product carriers will be LNG-conversion ready and will hold a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.
