GTT confirms order for two LNG Carriers

GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) confirms an order for two large LNGCs (Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers), which are in the third quarter 2014 order book. The two ships will be built by the Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries. The LNGCs are expected to be delivered between 2016 and 2017 and will be built with the innovative Mark III flex membrane technology, which allows an optimized daily boil-off rate of cargo LNG. These vessels will be owned by the Algerian shipping company Hyproc, which has been operating GTT-designed LNG carriers since 1971 and reaffirms regularly its trust in GTT membrane systems. Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT commented: “HHI and Hyproc are two long-term partners. We are delighted to see that these companies have chosen, once again, membrane containment solutions for their new buildings”. LNG carrier sets new standard for Boil Off Rate

Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions (WTS) passed a milestone by successfully completing the gas trial for the first LNG carrier built to a Boil Off Rate (BOR) of 0.08% per day.  WTS subsidiary company Ti Group completed the test on the LNG carrier Seishu Maru, currently under construction at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan for NYK Line. Ti Group was responsible for supplying the cargo tank insulation system on Seishu Maru, one of six LNG carriers to be delivered in this order. The vessel is a next generation Sayaendo design vessel, with a cargo capacity of 150,000 cubic meters. This unique design features four spherical Moss tanks protected by a continuous cover integrated with the ship’s hull. The ship passed its gas trial and was delivered to the owner in late September 2014. Ti Group Managing Director Anstein Sorensen says the ship’s insulation system received no specific comments during the trial, indicating a very satisfactory performance. “The gas trial is one of the critical tests to pass before the ship can be handed over to owner because it proves that the vessel’s containment system, including the insulation, is working correctly,” says Sorensen. “Passing the test at a BOR of just 0.08% is ...

SHI wins order for three LNG carriers from Asia

On October 13, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced that it had won an order from an Asian ship owner amounting to 620 million USD for three LNG carriers. The Eco-friendly LNG carriers purchased under the contract, which feature Dual Fuel engines, offer higher transport efficiency and lower gas emissions than previous LNG carriers. They are excellent in terms of both performance and efficiency. The 174,000m2 LNG carriers, which are due for delivery in 2018, will be put into the Asia-bound route to transfer US shale gas. Currently, US shale gas projects such as Sabine Pass, Cameron, Freeport, Cove Point projects have won export approval from the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). It is expected that about 90 carriers will be needed for the transport of LNG. Of these 90, 60 still need to be ordered, which means that there will be more orders of LNG carriers in the immediate term. In addition to the four projects approved for export, 14 more shale gas projects are awaiting the FERC's approval. LNG development is taking place in many countries, including Australia, Mozambique, and Tanzania. A spokesperson for Samsung Heavy Industries stated: "It is expected that more than 30 LNG carriers will be ...

DSME orders more dual fuel engines

MAN Diesel & Turbo has received an order for four MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI engines in connection with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME) agreeing a deal with the BW Group to build two LNG carriers. The technical engine specification complies with IMO Tier II, with options to include remedies for Tier III compliance at a later stage. The 173,400 m3 vessels are scheduled for delivery in late 2017/early 2018 and will be built at DSME’s Okpo shipyard in Geoje, Korea. The deal represents the second LNG ME-GI contract for DSME after a previous order signed in 2012. Compliance with IMO Tier III regulations basically requires an 80% reduction in NOx emissions – compared to Tier I – within the designated emission control areas (ECAs) over a defined test cycle. MAN Diesel & Turbo has successfully developed two main approaches to comply with these challenges: Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), which involves the catalytically accelerated reaction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia to form water and nitrogen, and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), which works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. Both methods enable compliance with the most stringent of regulations and give the ...

Mitsui develops new type medium size multi gas carrier

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) has been developing new type medium size multi gas carrier for sea transport of liquefied natural gas ("LNG") and co-product of shale gas such as ethane and ethylene gas("LEG"). In the coming decade, LNG carriers ("LNGC") may probably be classified into large scale LNGC and medium scale LNGC centering on the hub ports over the world. Meanwhile, LEG carriers ("LEGC"), which have been usually small ones, are expected to shift to larger LEGCs, which are comparable with medium scale LNGC in terms of the capacity. In the expectation of the new market development on the intersection of the said two trends and growing trade scale of liquefied petroleum gas ("LPG") such as propane and butane, MES developed "neo82GC" a prototype of medium size multi gas carrier. In the past years, MES has developed and offered to the market its "neo" series, next generation eco-friendly ships, in bulk carrier sector. This time, gas carrier is added to the lineup. MES will get support from Moss Maritime a.s to collaborate in further technical review of the multi gas carrier. MES continues to focus on expanding the lineup and accumulating order backlog of "neo" series so as to ...
