In an exclusive interview with SAFETY4SEA at Nor-Shipping, Mr. Nawfal Al Jourani, Director of Dubai Maritime Cluster Office at DMCA, shared Dubai’s priorities as a major maritime hub of the Middle East. Mr. Jourani noted that innovation is the cornerstone of Dubai’s strategy to be attractive to the shipping community. 

As part of its efforts to encourage more women in the maritime sector, the IMO supported a training course aimed at female officials from maritime and port authorities. A total of 25 women from 17 developing countries took part in the two-week "Women in Port Management" course, hosted in Le Havre.

SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce the distinguished shortlisted nominees for the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Awards, following an online nomination process, initiated a few months ahead of the event, where industry stakeholders proposed nominations. In the past both management and leadership were very much about processes or policies. However, these terms are evolving as long as humans continue to do so. That therefore means that the way leaders behave is changing as well.

Businesses with genuine gender diversity, particularly at senior level, perform better and see significant profit increases, according to a new ILO report. The report says that gender diversity effects beneficially when women hold 30% of leadership positions, although almost 60% of enterprises do not meet this target.

Swedish ferry operator Stena Line improved its gender diversity in the past year, with a reported increase of female leaders from 16 % to 19 %, the company said in its annual sustainability review released this week. Gender equality and inclusion was introduced as a new focus area in 2018.

Professor Patrick Hudson, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, provides an insight in the safety culture and leadership of the shipping world. He refers to the three different types of leaders, and the importance of right leading in order to prevent accidents that may be costly and fatal.

Kierstin Del Valle Lachtman recently became the new Secretary General of the Liberian Shipowners Council (LSC), the Liberian Registry announced. Ms. Lachtman has worked as a representative and advocate for shipowners, most recently as Manager of Maritime Policy for CLIA.

Disney Cruise Line announced a new initiative to inspire the next generation of female leaders in the maritime industry by funding scholarships to empower girls and young women to pursue careers in the cruise industry.
