The Seafarers Hospital Society launched a discussion paper titled ‘Seafarers’ Health: On Course for a Culture of Care’ which establishes possible key performance indicators (KPIs) for ship owners and operators to measure the effectiveness of strategies aimed at improving seafarer health and wellbeing.

SAFETY4SEA “Shipping ESG500 Survey” sets out an index illustrating the progress that ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) has made so far within the maritime industry, revealing that industry’s ESG performance stands at 49.1%. With slow but steady steps, the figure shows that the industry is on the right track for embracing ESG strategies.

A continuous risk assessment is vital to address possible risks related to ships performance in which many factors are taken into account in order to ensure the safety of crew, cargo and environment.

Whether a ship is to be inspected, it’s a decision based on specific MoU procedures. Commonly, if a ship is inspected once in a MoU and the inspection ended without any severe findings, then the ship will be inspected again within the inspection window set by each MoU.

During 2021, an increased number of inspections and detentions was noticed in comparison with 2020. A total of 1,394 detentions marked worldwide on all ship types. The global Detention rate (for all ship types) has been marked to 2.23%, while the last 3 years (2018-2019-2020) average was 2.43%

Shipping KPI gives the ability to users to compare performance parameters between ships of similar type, tonnage, trades or flag states, while remaining anonymous. Users can compare 33 different Key Performance Indicators, such as budget performance, ship availability, contained spills and officer retention. The KPIs are based on 64 individual performance indicators. 

ABS released its Nautical Systems Enterprise fleet management software, including NS Insight, a new business intelligence module. The NS aims to assist in the planning, execution and documentation of all compliance work processes. The new system includes a cloud-based NS Voyage Manager, tan expanded NS Autologger, and enhancements to NS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Manager.
