KR donates software to WMU The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) - an IACS member classification society - has donated 150 copies of its award-winning KR-CON software application to the World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden.KR-CON is a database application that contains full up-to-date texts of all IMO Conventions, Codes, Resolutions and Circulars in a single USB device. It helps users navigate through the complexities of IMO regulations and assists them to apply the various rules and regulations correctly.KR's Chairman and CEO, Mr Oh Kong-gyun signed a Memorandum of Understanding with WMU President, Dr. Björn Kjerfve to donate 150 copies of KR-CON to the university and to provide updated versions each year. "KR-CON is one of KR's greatest software and R&D achievements", said Oh Kong-gyun at the signing ceremony. "Using state-of-the-art technology, we have been able to archive the vast repository of IMO-generated material and deliver it in a user-friendly and intelligent format to a range of shipyards, shipping companies, flag states and other maritime authorities. Says CEO of the Korean Register According to Oh Kong-gyun, Chairman and CEO of the Korean Register, the global shipbuilding sector should seek growth opportunities from the offshore industry.Speaking at the 4th Seoul International Shipbuilding and Maritime Conference (SIMS) in Korea this week, Mr Oh explained that while the world fleet is continuing to grow, the number of new orders decreased within the period 2006-2009."It can be assumed", he said, "that over the coming 10 years, the yearly average newbuilding order book will be less than that of the past 10 years. The demand for containers, tankers and LNG carriers will decrease, while the construction of offshore platforms will show strength in the market place owing to a high demand for energy, increased investment in the exploitation of oil and gas and higher oil prices. The increased demand for deep-sea crude oil and natural gas will also lead to heightened newbuilding activities for deep-sea oil platforms. The new HQ oversees the operation of the 15 branch offices IACS member, Korean Register (KR) formally opened its Asia/Pacific headquarters in Singapore on 25th July.The new HQ oversees the operation of the 15 branch offices and survey stations located throughout the region.KR chairman & CEO, Oh Kong-gyun said: "The creation of the Asia/Pacific regional headquarters in Singapore cements our presence in this region and re-confirms our commitment to our customers who operate here."Establishing a network of regional HQs is part of our ongoing strategy to raise quality and customer service throughout the world.
