Ensuring containers safety on board container ships

Uwe-Peter Schieder, Loss Prevention Manager at GDV (German Insurance Association - Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft) and Vice-Chair of IUMI’s Loss Prevention Committee, provides his comment on securing containers on deck of a container ship. Technical aids for detecting resonance in a timely manner are being developed, but a decisive breakthrough has not been reached as of yet.

IUMI obliges refineries to conduct testing on low sulphur fuels

IUMI, the International Union of Marine Insurance, forces refineries to test on low sulphur fuels ahead of the introduction of the global sulphur cap on 2020. IUMI stated that fuel testing is undertaken by the end-user but this has to change. IUMI is calling for regulation that obliges refineries to guarantee the quality of their fuel and for vessel operators to improve their systems, processes and training to protect their vessels against the potential impact of using low sulphur bunkers.

IUMI: Marine insurance results remain under pressure

During IUMI's conference in Cape Town, Astrid Seltmann, Vice Chair of the IUMI Facts and Figures Committee gave updates on the macroeconomic environment and shipping market and the global marine insurance market. As IUMI stated the market environment is improving in all fields. Yet, sustainability of results can only be maintained by a risk evaluation taking into account all risk aspects.
