Τhe Round Table of International Shipping Associations (ΒΙMCO, INTERCARGO, International Chamber of Shipping and INTERTANKO) met last week to debate key issues facing the maritime industry.

From January to 4 March 2021, there were 53 incidents involving bulk carriers over 10,000 dwt, latest data by INTERCARGO reveal. These include a significant number of crew fatality or injury cases reported in the first two months of 2021.

Together in Safety, a coalition of 20 major shipping organizations aiming to make shipping safer, has issued its first Shipping Safety Report, including case studies and examples of best practice, which demonstrate the benefits of shared safety learnings and resources.

At the beginning of January 2021, RightShip and INTERCARGO launched DryBMS which is a new quality standard for the dry bulk sector. The standard will be governed by a new NGO to be established later this year and will support the improvement of safety in the dry bulk segment.

Amid COVID-19 pandemic and the trade disruption that has presented, major shipping organizations sent a letter to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, urging him to take a stand for the 400.000 seafarers stranded at sea.

INTERCARGO, The Standard Club and DNV GL jointly announced the launch of a new ventilation guide, highlighting the importance of proper ventilation for enhanced safety onboard bulk cargoes and  the different ventilation requirements that exist. The guide covers the main aspects on how and when to ventilate to control of humidity and to remove flammable and toxic gases released from cargoes.

Ahead of the important International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting (MEPC 75), INTERCARGO supports the IMO in approving the new mandatory measures that were developed by the 7th session of the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of Green House Gas Emissions (GHG) from Ships (ISWG-GHG 7).

INTERCARGO expresses its condemn against those charterers in the dry bulk sector have been preventing much needed crew changes from taking place during the period of the charter, despite the ship owner agreeing to accept the associated costs.

In light of an upward trend of attacks against ships in the Gulf of Guinea and as the approaching dry season is expected to bring an increase in attacks, BIMCO, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO and OCIMF have jointly issued an alert with security advice for vessels operating in the region.
